As a unique poetic form in English literary tradition, dramatic monologue is characterized with its first-person speaker. Based on the illustrations of the poems of Tennyson, Browning and Eliot, this paper holds that the first-person speaker in the dramatic monologue goes through a three-stage development with respective features and values: highly lyrical and subjective speaker, individualized objective speaker and an objective speaker serving as the prototype of a whole age.
