Guilin is famous for not only its beautiful landscape and ancient urban construction, but also its cliff carvings and stone sculptures. According to the investigation by the government, there are 1643 cliff carvings and 602 stone sculptures which were made during the period from the South Dynasties to the KMT reign. Those cliff carvings and stone sculptures are rich in contents with many masterpieces of every dynasty, concerning many aspects of social life. They offer us many rare materials from which we can have better understanding of the ancient politics, economy, culture and nationality relations in Guangxi and even in China. The cliff carvings and stone sculptures are distributed in more than 20 caves in Guilin City in harmony with the landscape. As an organic part of Guilin's history and culture, they are the cultural heritages rarely kept in South China. Since the 1950s, the rapid development of Guilin city has been challenging the protection of those cultural heritages. For their great value in history and culture, more study should be made on those lithoglyphs, and measures should be taken to improve the management and keep them well.
