OBJECTIVE: The effects of sexual activity on cardiovascular system have been paid attention to for a long time. It is thought that its harmful effects mainly concentrated on the cardiovascular diseases. The aim of the paper was to review the research achievements in this field at home and abroad, it is helpful for the correct understanding the association between sexual activity and health. DATA SOURCES: An online search of Pubmed database was undertaken to identify relevant papers published in English from January 1980 to June 2004 by using the keywords of “sexual activity, cardiovascular, human”. Meanwhile, Wanfang database and Chinese journals full-text database were scanned with computer to search relevant articles published from January 1994 to June 2004, the keywords were “sexual activity, cardiovaseular, human” with language limited to Chinese. STUDY SELECTION: Throughout tbe above search, the articles of experimental study and epidemiological study were selected, while articles about erectile disfunction but had nothing to do with cardiovascular diseases were excluded, and then the full-texts of the selected articles were searched, and the repetitive experimental studies were deleted. DATA EXTRACTION: Forty-seven relevant articles were collected, including 28 articles of experimental study and epidemiologlcal study, 19 were ha accordance with the inclusion criteria, 6 repetitive and 3 olden ones were deleted. DATA SYNTHESIS: The 19 articles were involved in nerve control of sexual activity, the effects of sexual activity on the cardiovascular system in healthy adults and patients with cardiovascular diseases, sexual activity related to acute heart events, and the cardiovascular risk of medicines related to sexual activity. CONCLUSION: Both the cardiovascular system and penis are controlled by central nervous system. Increased heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen uptake during coitus and the peak values of them appeared at the time of orgasm have been reported both in healthy population and the patients with chronic cardiovascular diseases. Sexual activity amount is equal to the level of moderate physical activity. Sexual activity is a relatively weak trigger factor for acute cardiac event. Cardiovascular risk exists only within the first 2 hours after coitus.
