Junction and nexus is a pair of terms coined by Danish linguist Otto Jespersen. According to Jespersen, the combination of a primary and an adjunct is a junction while the combination of a primary and a predicate is a nexus. Junction is a composite. A nexus always contains two ideas (or concepts). Jespersen compares: a junction is a picture, a nexus a process or a drama. Junction is rigid and lifeless; nexus is pliable. This paper mainly deals with the comparison between junction and nexus and discusses the application of nexus in English-Chinese translating in literature in hope of testifying the advantages of nexus in real use.
