Contents of main trace elements were analyzed for core samples from the northern Taihu Lake. Based on the background levels derived from the lower layer of the sediment samples, the authors managed to show the vertical distribution characteristics of heavy metals and their indicative significance for environmental changes. The heavy metals (Ni, Cr, Cu, Pb) in the subsurface show a significant positive relation with lithium, suggesting that heavy metals are present as a result of chemical leaching of bedrocks in the catchments. The distinct positive relations between Ni, Cr, Cu and organic carbon in the surface sediments imply that heavy metals are influenced by industrial and agricultural activities over the last few decades. The geochemical characteristics of the subsurface sediments are similar to those of bedrocks in the catchments, indicating that the subsurface sediments have the same material source as the bedrocks. And the geochemical characteristics of the surface sediments reflect the impact of anthropogenic activities.
