Objective To reconstruct the vagina model using magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) virtual reality technology and investigate the morphologic changes of vagina in pelvic organs prolapse(POP) patients. Methods POP patients(n=20) and controls(n=20) were enrolled in the study. All of them underwent 3D-T2 MRI imaging of pelvis. The MRI files were imported into virtual reality system, and 3-D models of each vagina were created. The transverse plane cross-sectional area and mid-sagittal plane diameter of each vaginal model were measured, and vaginal volume and shapes were assessed using 3-D virtual reality software. Results Vaginal thickness was similar in POP group and control group(P>0.05).The cross-sectional area in POP group was larger than that of control group(P<0.05).In volume of the vagina, there was a significant difference between the two groups(P<0.05).The variations of vagina shape, which presented with asymmetry, were found in 60% POP patients. The change of vagina axis was not found. Conclusion MRI virtual reality technology is an effective method to observe morphology of vagina. There are no defects of vagina itself in POP patients, however, the variations of vagina shape in POP may be found. The MRI presentative characteristics of vagina morphology reflect the function and status of pelvic floor supporting tissues connected with the vagina indirectly.
