In the present the effects of low temperature on the electric stimulus-induced isotonic twitch amplitude, contractile duration, semi-relaxation time and resting tension of cutaneous muscles and diaphragm from hedgehog (HCM, HDM, a hibernator) and guinea pig (GPCM, GPDM, a non-hibernator) was investigated. Seven steps of incubation tempertures, ranging ffrom 35℃ to 5℃, were used. On the responses to electric stimulus GPCM and GPDM decreased more steeply than HCM and HDM as the temperature lower down and become un-responsive at 5℃, howevwr the twitch amplitudes of HCM and HDM remained on the level of 40% and 60% of that at 35℃ respectovely. HCM and HDM could revive the contractile properties when the incubation temperature reversed from 5℃ or lower, but in on case did it occur among muscles of guinea pig. It was noticed that the resting tension of HCM enhanced markedly when the incubation temperature was lowered than 20℃ and this tension is thought to be a myogenic cold adaptaion. On the contrary, the restung tension of HDM became more relaxed when the temperature droppd downward. The resting tensions of both GPCM and GPDM wete not temperature dependent. These results suggest that this phylogenetic cold adaptation maybe in favour of the survival of hedgehog in hibernation.
