The modern silk fabric of China has not only the aspect inherited from theancient tradition, but also the characteristics reflecting the changes of times.Theforeign influences in general, and the western impact in particular, were mainlyresponsible for the change of textiles in modern China. The formation of thesecharacteristics has both the science-technology background and the costume culturebackground. It has been a long tradition originated from Tang Dynasty(618—907AD)to classify the silk into large categories,by the state. The old and new stand-ards of the fourteen categories(the former was used from 1960s to 1970s and thelatter is currently in effect),took shape on the basis of this tradition in concomitantconsideration of the realities of the day.The nomenclature of the categories is dis-cussed in this paper as well.
