The Child in Time is an important turning point in Ian McEwan's literary career and marks the achievement of an artistic maturation. The recurring, complex images of the child and of time unify the novel, intricately connecting the various episodes while simultaneously accentuating the relationship between childhood and adulthood and the necessity to search for the child within every individual-to fend off the ugliness and alienation of the contemporary adult universe. The novel also exemplifies that time is not a certainty, but a magical essence of life, an inexplicable entity that allows the ephemeral childhood of each person to continue existing throughout life. To maintain and strengthen their alliances in the chaotic world of contemporary society, adult men and women need to acknowledge that inner child, wherefrom they may derive sustenance and nourishment.
