The conception of the west only could be explicitly defined in comparing with the non-west. In the cultural horizon of the west, the westerners, to some extant, can recognize the non-west rationally. But at the same time they have a mistaken imagination on it as well. This imagination reflects the control and reconstruction of the west on the non-west, which is a hegemonic discourse and expresses the consciousness of superiority of the west. This paper tries to explore the reason forming this situation and explains how the west confronting the non-west and finally getting a superior position over it, through briefly tracing and analyzing the discourse system of the west on the non-west from classical age to 18th century.
