Abstract In this paper, the Samelson inverse for vectors is generalized to the matrix case, and the matrix valued rational interpolant is constructed by using Thiele-type continued fractions. Its rationality, characterization and uniqueness are discussed and proven. In the end, a useful error formula of the rational interpolants is given.
