The Xishan island,the biggest one in Taihu lake recently is studied for the 1/50,000 scale geological mapping.The quaternary system on the island was not studied in detail like this time.After about two-year investigation on stratigraphic,paleontological and related analysis,the paper reported a new discovery of Baishan formation in the area and carried out comprehensive researck ou it.Baishan fm has filled the last blanket of Quaternary system in tbe area, whick is more than 4.1 m thick only composed of upper silty clay containing gravels and lower light clay containing manganese nodule and gravel.According to the Pollen assemblage and heat-released spectrum dating,the Baishan fm belongs to middle Plesitocene Epoch.
