Coppet/zinc superoxide dismutase from bovine erythrocytes has been isolatedand purified. The specific activity of the purified enzyme is 8891 units per mg protein.lt exhibits one absorption maximum in the ultraviolet at 265 urn. A practical and simple methodfor the preparation of gelatin microspheres containing SOD is reported. The average diameterof the microspheres is 24 pm. There is 79. 6% recovery of SOD activity from the preparationof the microspheres. The experimental results prove that SOD entrapped in the microspheresexhibits more stabilities towards temperature,pH and hydrolysis of trypsin and similar immunogenicity as compared with natural SOD. As a consequence,the SOD microspheres canbeneficially be used as an enzyme for pharmaceutical .food and cosmetic industry.
