摘要
从信息论、系统论的观点出发，论述了地理信息系统的产生、发展过程；对地理信息系统的定义作了分析和总结；重点论述了地理信息系统的基本功能和应用；地理信息系统也是一种商品，它能带来巨大的经济效益，并有着广阔的发展前景．
From the viewpoint of the theories of information and system, a brief account is put forward of the process of the emergence and development of GIS, analysis and summary of all kinds of definitions about GIS, and thorough description of the basic functions and applications of GIS. Finally, the conclusion is reached that GIS is a kind of commodity which can bring about tremendous economic benefits, and thus should be greatly developed.
