With foreign policy readjustment since its independence, Russia has strengthened its diplomatic and military intervention in the CIS. Under such circumstances the Russian-Georgian bilateral ties began to ease starting with the settlement of the military conflicts that broke out due to the independence claims of the Georgian Abkhaz Republic and southern Osetija autonomic prefecture. But soon afterwards, Georgia was disappointed with Russia. Under the intervention of the USA and NATO and other strong external forces, Georgia-Russia bilateral ties soon cooled off and closed in onto armed conflicts due to the presence of Russian military bases in Georgia, visas for mutual visits and the Abkhaz issue.
