Arginine vasopressin(AVP)and adrenocortlcotrophic hormone(ACTH) are the important hormones which can regulate the balance of water metabolism in vivo.Thelevels of AVP and ACTH were determined in the blood of 14 patients with acute head injury. At 48 hours and 6~10days after head injury, the levels of AVP and ACTH in the blood increased obviously.AVP could reinforce the permeability of capillary to water in injury areas, and made encephaledema become severe. It is suggested that the disorder of the proportion between AVP and ACTH may be an important factor resulting in severe encephaledema.
