摘要
委婉语的形成起源于禁忌,它既是一种语言现象,又是一种社会现象。文章以语言和文化的关系为基点,对英汉委婉语从不同的角度进行了分析,探讨了英汉委婉语的共同特征———时代性、民族性、含蓄性、模糊性、诙谐性。
Euphemisms originated from taboo, which is closely related to social life of human beings. Therefore, euphemisms are considered not only as a linguistic phenomenon but also as a social one. Based on the relations between language and culture and through the detailed analysis of both Chinese and English euphemisms from different aspects, this paper holds that the English and Chinese euphemisms share some common features——they are witnesses of the human history, reflect the different cultures of the English and Chinese nations and they are implicit, ambiguous and humorous in language.
