The development of supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet), wind tunnul test and computational fluid dynamics simulation at high Mach numbers as well as advanced materials study are the main challenges facing the U.S. X-30 National Aero-Space Plane program. Despite possible funding cutbacks, contractors are still pursuing technologies needed for the program, and many advances have already been made.
