Two strains of haloalkaliphic bacteria were isolated from the salt and alkaline samples in Xinjiang Hami.They are halophilic with growth in media containing 10%-30% NaCl and alkaliphilic with growth at pH 8.5-11.Strains H3 and H8 are strictly acrobic,non-motile and gram negative.Strains H3 is rod,single,O.5-1by 2-4um in liquid culture.Strain H8 is coccoid,single and tetrads,1.2-1.5um in diameter under all condition of gtowth.CoIonies of strains H3 and H8 on milkalt-agar are not lager than 2mm in diameter.The colony of strain H3 is round,smooth and light pink,and the colony of strain H8 is round,smooth and light orange.Their optimum temperature is 37℃.Both strains liquefy gelatin,reduce nitrate to nitrite and is sensitive to erythromycin,streptomycin,penicillin and but don't metaboliz carbohydrates and don't produce indile and H2S.They may grow in low Mgenvironment.
