This essay takes Chinese in Malaysia as a case to examine the triple characteristics of ethnic Chinese (Chineseness, locality ness, and globality) and their formation, substance, status, and role in the modernization process of Malaysia. Influenced by internal and external factors, those characteristics constitute the uniqueness of the Malaysian Chinese. They are not only contingent upon the shifting environments within the Malaysian state as well as inter racial relations between Chinese and other races, but also upon the emerging trend of regionalization, globalization, and socio economic changes in China. The role and limitation of the ethnic Chinese in the modernization of Malaysia are also resulted from the triple characteristics.
