The article deals with the application of implication theory to literary translation, which requires the con-stant exercise of a translator's power of inference. In the first stage of translating, when comprehension of the orig-inal text is the primary task, a translator needs to analyze the regular and conventional relations of the original lan-guage as well as the cases in which the co-operative principle is infringed. Then, bearing in mind the similarities and the differences between the original language and the target language, the translator has to be guided by the co-operative principle in organizing the target language so that the requirements of the target language could be sat-isfactorily met. The translated text may then attain as high a degree of equivalence to the original text as possible.
