In his autobiography, entitled Account of a Shepherd, Yu You ren wrote that his thought was developed at three different stages: 1) his national consciousness was aroused by reading poems. 2) the Qing dynasty had blind faith in foreign things and practiced tyranny at home in the late 19th and early 20th. 3) Imperialist's aggression speeded his thought development. In 1906, he joined Tung Meng Hui, Chinese Revolutionary League, and his thought went into full development and was perfected.
