The present straight distance between the Yangtze plate and the Tarim plate(from Qiemo to Chengdu),is 1 900 km. Nevertheless, many geologists hold that these two plates are connected with or not far from each other according to the comparability of fauna, flora and sedimentary faces of the Early Paleozoic. This is a complicated problem that various geologists are interested in. This paper discusses the kinematic features of separation and congregation of theYangtze plate and the Tarim plate from “Emei taphrogeny” and “Xingkai taphrogeny” in the Paleozoic tectonic plate evolutionary history of China, and deals withthe kinetic mechanism of the Yangtze plate′s eastward migration on the basisof “Emei mantle plume” theory. If the hypothesis that the Yangtze plate was separated from the Tarim plate and migrated eastward in the Permian can hold,it can serve as evidence for the first opening of Paleo-Tethys in China. It isof great geological significance in the study of extensive eruption of Permian basalts in some areas of Russia and India. The action must also have played an important role in the mass extinction during the Late Permian and early Triassic. With this theory, the Panzhihua type V, Ti magnetite deposits and Cu, Ni and Pt deposits may be found in the Altun and adjacent area. A comparison withthe Permian organic reef gas reservoirs in Sichuan is also helpful to the study of the hydrocarbon generationand migration in Tarim basin as well as to the prospecting for large petroleumfields there.
