AbstractWith its emphasis on discourse as the basic unit through which meaning is negotiated and on the solitary relations between texts and social contexts,systemic functional linguistics provides insights into the reading process.These insights are discussed in the present article,which leads to reconceptualization of reading as a social process in which different levels of analysis interact to produce the intended discourse meaning.
