The graves at Wangzifenshan lie at the foot of a hill facing an extensive valley, and located one km east of Yuantaizi village, Shiertai Township, Chaoyang County in Liaoning. In 1987,archaeologists excavated 14 of the tombs, and 21 more in 1990. Of the total 35 tombs, one is dated to the Spring and Autumn period,5 to the Warring States period,8 to the Western Han dynasty and 2 to the Western and Eastern Jin dynasties.
Those tombs of the Jin dynasty with large yield are the highlight of the excavation. Usually of a small size, they all have a vertical earthen shaft containing a wooden coffin with one end bigger than the other. The funerary objects, which were placed within the coffin, include mainly pottery, and many gold, silver and bronze ornaments. The gold hairpin in the shape of a tree in blossom is very impressive.
Archaeologists believe that the tombs belong to the Xianbei culture and covered a long time span with the upper limit at the Cao-Wei period and the lower limit on the eve of Former Yan state established by Murong Xianbei of west Liaoning, i. e. , somewhere between the 3rd and 4th century.
