The Baiyangcun Neolithic site is situated on a higher ground on the eastern bank ofthe Binju River, three kilometers northeast of the Binchuan county seat. The deposits, six meters above the river, are stratigraphically simple.Beneath the cultivated soil is alayer of the Neolithic culture,4.35 meters thick. In it are found 11 house remains,14furnaces,48 cellars,34 tombs, ahd a total of over 500 objects of pottery, stone and bone. The major tools uncovered are made of flaked stone with polished edges. The potteryare dominated by the hand-made utensils of pottery mixed with sand.Typical of theseare various types of pottery jars,urns,round-bottomed bowls and gourd-shaped,spoutedewers.There are also a small number of three-legged or foot-rimmed vessels. The houesesare rectangular wooden structures.Among the tombs, those for adults are varied in burial customs. In individual casesthe dead were headless. No funerary objects were found in these tombs. An analysis of stratigraphical evidence and the relics suggests that the Baiyangeun sitecan be classified into the early and later stages which represent two periods of a certainculture,Radiocarbon tests conducted on some specimens of charcoal unearthed from posthole No.2 in the remain of house No.9 of the early stage give a date of 3770±85(1820±85 B.C.).The Neolithic culture in the Erhai area represented by the Baiyangcun site seems to bea new type of culture along the upper Changjiang——the Jinsha River.
