Excavation of the Western Han tomb No.1 was carried out from September to Novem-ber 1978 on the western bank of the Xiangjiang River in Changsha.Undr an earthenmound a sloping ramp leads to the tomb entrance guarded by a pair of human figurines. The trapezoidal pit is 20.55 meters long, more than 18 meters wide at the top and 7.9meters deep. Two ledges were set into the upper walls.A big wooden structure in the center consists of a passage,a huangchand ticou (a wallmade of piled-up square cypress blocks surrounding the funerary chamber),a funerarychamber,an ante-chamber,an outer corridor,an inner corridor,a coffin chamber and a nestof coffins one inside another. The huangchang ticou,an enclosure square in shape, was builtof 908 cypress blocks. When found, most of the blocks were in disorder. Those on top hadrotted but those below had been fairly well preserved. The outline of the enclosing wall wasstill visible. The tomb had been robbed some time ago and very few funeral objects left.Mostof those remaining axe pottery articles such as tripods, boxes, pots, square vases and spoonsand ladles,a collection similar to that in the early Western Han tombs excavated in Chang-sha.There are also lacquerware and a supply of'coins'of unbaked clay—for the de-ceased to'spend'in the afterworld. This is the third Western Han tomb with a Huangchang ticou structure so far unearth-ed.One was found at Dabaotai in Beijing and the other,Cao Xuan's tomb,at Doubi Moun-tain (west of the new find). With its distinctive layout, the Tomb No.1 at Xiangbizuiprovides new valuable material for the study of China's ancient funeral system.
