Abstract This article inquires into the relations between the Yi Ji(entertainerprostitute)and San Qu(nondramatic songs)of the Yuan Dynasty. The author holds that a lot of the Yi Ji get involved in the performance and creation of San Qu,which results in the abundance of works of San Qu devoted to the Yi Ji and responded by them. Therefore, most of the romance in San Qu is based on the love stories of scholars and prostitutes and is written in a gaudy and passionate style. The Yi Ji is not restrained by the feudal ethic code and feels free to express their emotions, thus helping to form the fluency and openmindedness in San Qus style. As folk artists, they enable San Qu to gain a very strong feature of popular literature. However, some works devoted to the Yi Ji appear erotic and vulgar.
