摘要
本文以空间批评理论为基础具体分析加拿大作家玛格丽特.劳伦斯《石头天使》中空间元素对主题建构的意义,指出劳伦斯通过回溯、碎片式内心独白及并置性情节线索和意象等叙事手法精心营构出文本的空间结构,凸显了女主人公哈格心理空间的曲折变化,并将哈格在物理空间不断挪移迁徙的过程折射成为其自我寻求的隐喻系统,刻画了哈格在自我寻求道路上艰难跋涉的心路历程,揭示了加拿大女性个体的生存困惑,空间元素不但承担了重要的叙事功能更成为主题建构的重要载体和媒介,体现了劳伦斯强烈的空间意识,也表明了她对后现代文学写作不断创新的态度。
Using spatial theory,this paper analyzes the thematic significance of space in Canadian writer Margaret Laurence's novel The Stone Angel.The paper argues that Laurence employs such narrative techniques as retrospection,fragmented monologue and the juxtaposition of plots and images to create a vivid textual space,emphasizing the change of the heroine's psychological space.The heroine's physical movement,however,metaphorically reveals her arduous journey of self-discovery.In this case,the spatial elements not only play a functional role in the narrative but also carry the theme of the novel,which reflects Laurence's strong sense of space and her innovations in the art of writing.
