An analysis of the 'Issue and Ism' Debate from the twofold perspectives of knowledge and ethics reveals the different attitudes and approaches of the May Fourth intellectuals toward modernity.The major cause of the debate was how the knowledge nature and the transcendence of Marxism were to be understood.
