Twenty-nine water samples were collected from different rivers of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone. An inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure the concentrations of trace element in the sampling water. The result suggested that the average concentrations of rare earth element in river water showed an increasing trend from Xijiang River, Beijiang River, Channels of Pearl River Delta, Shenzhen River to Dongjiang River. As to heavy metal elements, Channels of Pearl River Delta and Shenzhen River have relatively high concentrations. Relatively lower concentrations of heavy metal appear in Xijiang River and Beijiang River. It can be found that trace element distribution in river of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone is affected by both natural conditions and human activity. Natural background does the main impact on the spatial distribution of rare earth element. As to the distribution of heavy metal, human activity is an important factor that can't be ignored.
