One of the features in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is its comic effect. The comic element comes both from the ancient western comedy and the carnival tradition of the burghers in the Middle Ages. Chaucer made full use of the comic techniques such as banter, satire, absurdity and ridicule. In this way he tries to blaspheme the holy things and dispel solemnity.
