Focusing on The Assistant and The Fixer by Bernard Malamud, the paper attempts to analyze Malamud's naturalism reflected in his early works. The paper argues that Malamud's naturalism are greatly influenced by Zola on the one hand, and on the other hand evolved from his own Jewish identity and his strong sense of Jewishness. The paper also points out that the most important features of Malamud's naturalism are his emphasis on 'environment' through experiment with writing techniques and his detailed description of the reality.
