Herman Melville's great novel Moby Dick as a cultural heritage of the world, has been widely studied, but so far as its religious meaning is concerned, adequate researches are still scarce. The present paper tries to make an exploring study in this respect. The paper holds that Moby Dick represents Melville's complex and uncertain religious ideas. On the one hand, the god in his mind is the Divinity in The Old Testament, whose will people should comply with against their own. But on the other hand, his god refers to the deity of nature represented by the great whale. Though he doubts the mercy of god in The Bible, yet he does not want to abandon the constraint of its doctrines to elevate man to deity as the transcendentalists used to do then.
