The present article approaches Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Fall of the House of Usher from the perspective of narratology and archetypal theory. It argues that the role of the narrator is of great importance in that it links up the fictitious world and the real world, thus contributing to the terrifying effect and mediating the aesthetic interpretation. In accordance with the principles of archetypal theory, the paper points out that literariness of literary works is created by the displacement of myths which is in turn a deviation from daily life. As an illustration of the principle, the paper shows that this effect in The Fall of the House of Usher, is achieved through demonic imagery and displacement of the revival archetype. Then the paper contends that though the story seems grotesque and arabesque, it nevertheless has a secret concern for human beings in its description of and reflection on human experiences.
