Eugene O'Neill, the maker of modern American drama and the Nobel Prize winner, is an original and prolific playwright with more than fifty plays published within his life time. His early plays are influenced by naturalism, though the keynote is realistic. In the middle period of his life, his plays are experimental, including expressionistic tragedies, psychoanalytic tragedies and belief-probing tragedies. Later in life, his plays are realistic, often dealing withsocial issues. In a word, O'Neill's plays have far-reaching influences and have made great contributions to world theatre.
