Based on an exploration of the narrative features and meanings of L′ Etranger and The Catcher in the Rye from the perspective of the marks of special discourses, the present thesis points out that the most prominent feature of the two texts lies in their indifference in value which is brought about by their incompatible semantic meaning and cultural significance. The author contends that the eclectic wording of the novels not only mirrors the novelists′ perception of the deep structure of the society, but also acts as a personal response to the depravity of the social language environment caused by ideological conflicts. In the author′s point of view, each of the two novels, with an anti hero as the central character, with indifferent descriptions and carnivalization as the major narrative tools, is a critique of the depreciation of central ideological discourses as well as a revelation of the deceitfulness of the pre eminent social discourses.
