As one of the king figures in the epic, Beowulf shows remarkable blemishes in his character, which makes his life story a tragic one. He is certainly not a perfect epic hero. We hear between the lines a fairly strong note of criticism. To the poet, Beowulf is not a kind of king as is idealized in the Germanic tradition. He shares one way or another the critical weaknesses, which eventually lead his kingdom to disaster. He may be an admirable hero, but far from the perfection as is demonstrated by the model king Scyld.
