The genus Limonia Meigen,1803 is globally distributed with 216 known species/subspecies,of which 30 are recorded from China. In this study,we firstly use DNA barcodes(mt COI)to identify specimens of Limonia from China, result in a discovery of three species.Considering the morphological data, these species were identified as L.albiterminalis Lü,Ren&Zhang,sp.nov.,L.juvenca Alexander,1935(new record in China),and L.macrostigma(Schummel,1829),respectively.Six COI sequences of the three species were provided, analyzed with other 24 COI sequences from Limonia species. The result indicates that intraspecific distances in the genus are generally less than 2.2%,interspecific distances range from 7.9%to 17.2%,and there is no overlap between intra-and interspecific distances.Redescription and illustrations of L.juvenca and illustration of male hypopygium of L.macrostigma,as well as the key to the Chinese Limonia crane flies, are all provided. 展开更多

A new species of white-toothed shrew,Crocidura anhuiensis Zhang,Zhang&Li,sp.nov.is described from Mount Huang,China.Genetic sequence(mt DNA Cyt b gene)and morphological(external and skull)data are used to distinguish this newly discovered species. The phylogenetic analysis shows that the materials of this work are monophyletic and allied to C.attenuata by the uncorrected genetic distance 4.9–5.1%,which suggests a species-level divergence.Morphologically, the materials are different from C.attenuata by presenting a greater proportion of tail-to-body ratio and the presence of an obvious tooth root in the mandible.Based on those data, the unnamed species is described as a new species which is currently known only from the Wild Monkey Valley,Mount Huang,Anhui Province,China. 展开更多

Burmite(Burmese amber) from the Hukawng Valley in northern Myanmar is a remarkable valuable and obviously the most important amber for studying terrestrial diversity in the mid-Cretaceous. The diversity of Burmite inclusions is very high and many new taxa were found, including new order, new family/subfamily, and new genus. Till the end of 2016, 14 phyla, 21 classes, 65 orders, 279 families, 515 genera and 643 species of organisms are recorded, which are summized and complied in this catalogue. Among them, 587 species are arthropods. In addtion, the specimens which can not be identified into species are also listed in the paper. The information on type specimens, other materials, host and deposition of types are provided. 展开更多

Callosobruchus maculatus(Fabricius,1775)(Coleoptera:Bruchinae)is a destructive agricultural pest that is harmful to beans worldwide and an important quarantine pest in China. It was divided into two phenotypes based on polyphenism:normal and flight forms. In this study,we first compared the morphological structures of the compound eyes of the two forms.According to the results of scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),microcomputed tomography(micro-CT),and computer three-dimensional reconstruction, there are no differences in the structures of the compound eyes between the normal and flight forms except for the number of ommatidia. From the internal structure, the compound eyes have a biconvex cornea with open rhabdom and acone eye, crystalline cone directly connected with rhabdom, and no clear zone.It is a kind of apposition eye.Ommatidia facets range in shape from quadrilateral to hexagonal and some irregular shapes. On electroretinograms(ERGs),the normal and flight forms showed different spectral sensitivities:the normal form had the strongest response to ultraviolet light, whereas the flight form had the strongest response to white light.Behavioral assays revealed that the normal and flight forms showed completely opposite phototaxis behaviors;the flight form exhibited positive phototaxis, whereas the normal form exhibited negative phototaxis. This study not only enriches our knowledge on coleopteran compound eyes but also provides a foundation for in-depth research on the photoreceptor mechanisms of compound eyes, which may be useful in pest control management. 展开更多

The freshwater planarian Dugesia japonica has become a model organism in regeneration biology and toxicology due to its powerful regeneration capability and highly chemical sensitivity.Nonetheless, little is known about its evolutionary history and demographics.Taihang Mountains is the natural boundary between the Loess Plateau and the North China Plain, and is considered as one of the important priority areas for biodiversity conservation in China. In order to figure out the genetic diversity, population structure and demographic history of D.japonica in Taihang Mountains,a study based on the mitochondrial COI from 116 individuals sampled across 20 populations has been conducted. The results showed that the 116 COI sequences yielded 32 haplotypes, including 8 shared haplotypes and 24 private ones. The overall haplotype diversity(Hd)and nucleotide diversity(π)were 0.920 and 0.083,respectively.Even though the AMOVA results suggested that the genetic variation among populations was significant(FST=0.480,P<0.01),the phylogeny and haplotype network analysis based on 32 haplotypes revealed no obvious phylogeographic pattern.Furthermore, the significantly positive values of neutrality test(Tajima’s D=2.596,P<0.05;Fu’s Fs=2.769,P<0.01)together with the multimodal arrangement of mismatch distribution indicated that D.japonica in Taihang Mountains would have been undergoing population decline. We hope these findings will arouse conservation and management strategy regarding freshwater planarians and contribute to the biodiversity in the long run. 展开更多

The Woodcock's head: Resolving a morphological oddity using geometric morphometrics

The scope of shape analysis based on geometric morphometrics has evolved into underscoring complex patterns of multidimensional shape change with multivariate statistical modelling (e.g., allometry, morphological integration, etc.). Such breakthrough was made possible because the method relies on a consistent comparative reference system to compare shapes, the latter which is computed using the Cartesian coordinates of homologous landmarks. It has been shown elsewhere that traditional comparative reference systems based on anatomy, and oriented in stereotyped postures, such as the Frankfurt plane at rest, the Lateral Semicircular Canal when the animal is in alert, or the cranial floor when the animal is flying, are all inconsistent for anatomical comparisons. They vary too much and unpredictably across species. An extraordinary example of the problems that can arise in descriptive and comparative anatomy when using such reference systems is the traditional interpretation of the head of the Woodcock. Anywhere in literature it is written that the eyes of this gamebird are oriented backwards to protect itself from predators. Here, using geometric morphometrics it is demonstrated that the woodcock's skull is highly transformed, yet following a normal trend among birds. In turn, using GM it is demonstrated that the collective wisdom about this oddity is simply the result of interpreting the anatomy of its skull using unreliable reference systems. 展开更多

Based on molecular phylogeny of the Chinese white cross-band krait, Bungarus multicinctus, several individuals from southwestern and southern China were found to be nested within putative species B. candidus(Linnaeus, 1758) with high support values. Morphological examination also indicated these specimens were identical to B. candidus. We concluded that the Chinese white cross-band krait, previously identified as B. multicinctus in southwest and south China, should be recognized as B. candidus, a new record in China, and B. m. wanghaoti should be invalid.
