Nuclear excitation by electron capture(NEEC)is a fundamental process in nuclear physics.Despite its theoretical framework established nearly half a century ago,the experimental confirmation of NEEC remains elusive because of significant technical challenges.A notable effort to validate NEEC experimentally involved the enhanced ^(93m)Mo isomer-depletion experiment, which was ultimately hindered by substantial noise interference. This mini-review provides a brief historical overview of NEEC studies and explores the role of NEEC processes in astrophysical environments and laser-induced plasmas.Several platforms have been proposed to facilitate the observation of NEEC,including traditional cooling-storage rings, ion accelerators, and electron beam ion traps. These approaches aim to enhance the nuclear excitation rate, thereby improving the signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, the employment of exotic vortex beams is discussed as a potential methodological approach to address these challenges. 展开更多

ENN He Long-2(EHL-2)is the next-generation large mega-Ampere(MA)spherical torus(ST)proposed and funded by the ENN company. The design parameters are:Ti0>30 keV,n_(e0)~1×10^(20)m^(-3),Ip~3 MA,Bt~3 T.One of the biggest challenges of EHL-2 is how to achieve several MA current flat-tops with limited voltage-seconds(Vs)of the center solenoid(CS)coils. In order to minimize the consumption of Vs,a fully non-inductive start-up by electron cyclotron resonance heating(ECRH)will be applied in EHL-2.The ramp-up phase will be accomplished with the synergetic mode between the CS and non-inductive methods. The strategy of non-inductive start-up and ramp-up with synergetic mode has been verified on EXL-50U’s experiments.Based on this strategy, numerical simulations indicate the feasibility of EHL-2 achieving 3 MA plasma current.A high-performance steady-state scenario with Ip~1.5 MA is also designed. In this scenario, the bootstrap current fraction fBS>70%,the safety factor q at the magnetic axis q0>2,the minimum safety factor qmin>1,the poloidal betaβp>3 and normalized betaβN>2.3.Each design iteration integrates the validation of physical models with the constraints of engineering implementation, gradually optimizing the performance of the heating and current drive(H&CD)systems.Numerical simulation results for general auxiliary H&CD systems such as neutral beam injection(NBI),electron cyclotron(EC)wave, ion cyclotron wave(ICW),and lower hybrid wave(LHW)are presented. These simulation results ensure that the 31 MW H&CD systems comprehensively cover all scenarios while maintaining engineering feasibility. 展开更多

The process of riming significantly impacts the microphysical characteristics of clouds. This study uses aircraft and radar observation data in stratiform clouds with convection embedded that occurred in the central and southern regions of North China on 22 May 2017.The microphysical structural characteristics and processes near the embedded convection core and in the stratiform cloud are analyzed comparatively.Particular attention is given to the effect of riming on the microphysical properties near the upper boundary of the melting layer and to the factors influencing riming efficiency. The collaborative observations reveal that the particle size distributions observed near the convection core and in the stratiform region are close, while the particle properties like habit and riming degree are quite different.Above the melting layer, larger plate-like ice particles and supercooled water droplets(D>50μm)are more abundant near the convective core, leading to higher collision efficiencies between ice particles and supercooled water droplets.Larger fluctuation amplitudes of vertical airflow near the convective core also contribute to the increased riming activity and the formation of more heavily rimed particles, such as graupel.Furthermore,in situ measurements from airborne probes also revealed that above the melting layer, the riming process involves two stages:the mass of snow crystals grows as supercooled droplets merge internally without changing size, followed by external freezing that significantly enlarges the crystals. 展开更多

We present the preparation and measurement of the radioactive isotope^(37)Ar,which was produced using thermal neutrons from a reactor,as a calibration source for liquid xenon time projection chambers.^(37)Ar is a low-energy calibration source with a half-life of 35.01 days, making it suitable for calibration in the low-energy region of liquid xenon dark-matter experiments.Radioactive isotope^(37)Ar was produced by irradiating ^(36)Ar with thermal neutrons. It was subsequently measured in a gaseous xenon time projection chamber(GXe TPC)to validate its radioactivity. Our results demonstrate that^(37)Ar is an effective and viable calibration source that offers precise calibration capabilities in the low-energy domain of xenon-based detectors. 展开更多

Optimizing the microchannel design of the next generation of chips requires an understanding of the in situ property evolution of the chip-based materials under fast cooling. This work overcomes the conventional reliance on reheating data of melt-quenched glasses by demonstrating direct observations of glass transition on cooling curves utilizing the most advanced fast differential scanning calorimetry.By leveraging an MEMS chip sensor that allows for rapid heat extraction from microgram-sized samples to a purged gas coolant, the device is able to reach ultra-fast cooling rates of up to 40,000 K·s^(−1).Four thermal regions are identified by examining the cooling behaviors of two metallic glasses. This is because the actual rate of the specimen can differ from the programmed rate, especially at high set rate when the actual rate decreases before the glass transition is completed. We define the operational window for reliable cooling curve analysis, build models with empirical and theoretical analyses to determine the maximum feasible cooling rate, and demonstrate how optimizing sample mass and environment temperature broaden this window. The method avoids deceptive structural relaxation effects verified by fictivetemperature analysis and permits the capture of full glass transition during cooling. 展开更多

MnO_(x)-CeO_(2)catalysts for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction(SCR)of NO remain vulnerable to water and sulfur poisoning, limting their practical applications.Herein,we report a hydrophobic-modified MnO_(x)-CeO_(2)catalyst that achieves enhanced NO conversion rate and stability under harsh conditions. The catalyst was synthesized by decorating MnOx crystals with amorphous CeO_(2),followed by loading hydrophobic silica on the external surfaces. The hydrophobic silica allowed the adsorption of NH_(3)and NO and diffusion of H,suppressed the adsorption of H_(2)O,and prevented SO_(2)interaction with the Mn active sites, achieving selective molecular discrimination at the catalyst surface. At 120℃,under H_(2)O and SO_(2)exposure,the optimal hydrophobic catalyst maintains 82%NO conversion rate compared with 69%for the unmodified catalyst. The average adsorption energies of NH_(3),H_(2)O,and SO_(2)decreased by 0.05,0.43,and 0.52 eV,respectively. The NO reduction pathway follows the Eley-Rideal mechanism,NH_(3)^(*)+*→NH_(2)^(*)+H^(*)followed by NH_(2)^(*)+NO^(*)→N_(2)^(*)+H_(2)O^(*),with NH_(3)dehydrogenation being the rate determining step.Hydrophobic modification increased the activation energy for H atom transfer, leading to a minor decrease in the NO conversion rate at 120℃.This work demonstrates a viable strategy for developing robust NH_(3)-S CR catalysts capable of efficient operation in water-and sulfur-rich environments. 展开更多

We present a prototype for hybrid Compton and positron emission tomography(PET)imaging aimed at enhancing data utilization and enabling concurrent imaging of multiple radiopharmaceuticals. The prototype comprises two detectors that utilize LYSO-SiPM and were available in our laboratory. One detector consists of a 50×50 array of LYSO crystals, each measuring 0.9mm×0.9mm×10mm with 1 mm pitches, whereas the other detector comprises a 25×25 array of LYSO crystals, each measuring 1.9mm×1.9mm×10mm with 2 mm pitches. These detectors are mounted on a rotational stage, which enables them to function as either a Compton camera or a PET detector pair. The 64-channel signals from the SiPMs of each detector are processed through a capacitive multiplexing circuit to yield four position-weighted outputs.Distinct energy windows were used to discriminate Compton events from PET events.Energy resolution and energy-channel relationships were calibrated via multiple sources. The measured average energy resolutions(full widths at half maximum,FWHMs)for the detectors at 511 keV were 17.5%and 15.2%,respectively.The initial experimental results indicate an angular resolution(FWHM)of 8.6◦for the system in Compton imaging mode.A V-shaped tube injected with 18 F solution was clearly reconstructed, which further verified the imaging capabilities of the system in Compton imaging mode. The results of simulation and experimental imaging studies show that the system can detect tumors as small as 1 mm in diameter when working in PET imaging mode.Mouse bone PET imaging was successfully conducted, with the results matching well with the corresponding CT images. This technology holds great potential for advancing the development of physiological function modalities. 展开更多

Superconducting elect rides have attracted growing attention for their potential to achieve high superconducting transition temperatures(T_(C))under pressure. However, many known elect rides are chemically reactive and unstable, making high-quality single-crystal growth, characterization, and measurements difficult, and most do not exhibit superconductivity at ambient pressure. In contrast,La_(3) In stands out for its ambient-pressure superconductivity(T_(C)∼9.4 K)and the availability of high-quality single crystals. Here,we investigate its low-energy electronic structure using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. The bands near the Fermi energy(E_(F))are mainly derived from La 5d and In 5p orbitals.A saddle point is directly observed at the Brillouin zone(BZ)boundary, while a three-dimensional Van Hove singularity crosses E_(F) at the BZ corner.First-principles calculations further reveal topological Dirac surface states within the bulk energy gap above E_(F).The coexistence of a high density of states and in-gap topological surface states near𝐸F suggests that La3In offers a promising platform for tuning superconductivity and exploring possible topological superconducting phases through doping or external pressure. 展开更多

Fine-grained nuclear graphite is a key material in high-temperature gas-cooled reactors(HTGRs).During air ingress accidents, core graphite components undergo severe oxidation, threatening structural integrity. Therefore, understanding the oxidation behavior of nuclear graphite is essential for reactor safety. The influence of oxidation involves multiple factors, including temperature, sample size, oxidant, impurities, filler type and size, etc. The size of the filler particles plays a crucial role in this study.Five ultrafine-and superfine-grained nuclear graphite samples(5.9-34.4μm)are manufactured using identical raw materials and manufacturing processes.Isothermal oxidation tests conducted at 650℃-750℃ are used to study the oxidation behavior.Additionally, comprehensive characterization is performed to analyze the crystal structure, surface morphology, and nanoscale to microscale pore structure of the samples. Results indicate that oxidation behavior cannot be predicted solely based on filler grain size.Reactive site concentration, characterized by active surface area, dominates the chemical reaction kinetics, whereas pore tortuosity, quantified by the structural parameterΨ,plays a key role in regulating oxidant diffusion. These findings clarify the dual role of microstructure in oxidation mechanisms and establish a theoretical and experimental basis for the design of high-performance nuclear graphite capable of long-term service in high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. 展开更多

(NbZrHfTi)C high-entropy ceramics,as an emerging class of ultra-high-temperature materials, have garnered significant interest due to their unique multi-principal-element crystal structure and exceptional hightemperature properties. This study systematically investigates the mechanical properties of(NbZrHfTi)C high-entropy ceramics by employing first-principles density functional theory, combined with the Debye-Grüneisen model,to explore the variations in their thermophysical properties with temperature(0–2000 K)and pressure(0–30 GPa).Thermodynamically, the calculated mixing enthalpy and Gibbs free energy confirm the feasibility of forming a stable single-phase solid solution in(NbZrHfTi)C.The calculated results of the elastic stiffness constant indicate that the material meets the mechanical stability criteria of the cubic crystal system, further confirming the structural stability.Through evaluation of key mechanical parameters—bulk modulus, shear modulus,Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio—we provide comprehensive insight into the macro-mechanical behaviour of the material and its correlation with the underlying microstructure.Notably, compared to traditional binary carbides and their average properties,(NbZrHfTi)C exhibits higher Vickers hardness(Approximately 28.5 GPa)and fracture toughness(Approximately 3.4 MPa⋅m^(1/2)),which can be primarily attributed to the lattice distortion and solid-solution strengthening mechanism. The study also utilizes the quasi-harmonic approximation method to predict the material’s thermophysical properties, including Debye temperature(initial value around 563 K),thermal expansion coefficient(approximately 8.9×10^(−6) K−1 at 2000 K),and other key parameters such as heat capacity at constant volume. The results show that within the studied pressure and temperature ranges,(NbZrHfTi)C consistently maintains a stable phase structure and good thermomechanical properties. The thermal expansion coefficient increasing with temperature, while heat capacity approaches the Dulong-Petit limit at elevated temperatures. These findings underscore the potential of(NbZrHfTi)C applications in ultra-high temperature thermal protection systems, cutting tool coatings, and nuclear structural materials. 展开更多

Electrocatalytic nitric oxide(NO)reduction reaction(NORR)is a promising and sustainable process that can simultaneously realize green ammonia(NH3)synthesis and hazardous NO removal. However, current NORR performances are far from practical needs due to the lack of efficient electrocatalysts.Engineering the lattice of metal-based nanomaterials via phase control has emerged as an effective strategy to modulate their intrinsic electrocatalytic properties.Herein,we realize boron(B)-insertion-induced phase regulation of rhodium(Rh)nanocrystals to obtain amorphous Rh_(4)B nanoparticles(NPs)and hexagonal close-packed(hcp)RhB NPs through a facile wet-chemical method.A high Faradaic efficiency(92.1±1.2%)and NH_(3) yield rate(629.5±11.0μmol h^(−1) cm^(−2))are achieved over hcp RhB NPs,far superior to those of most reported NORR nanocatalysts. In situ spectro-electrochemical analysis and density functional theory simulations reveal that the excellent electrocatalytic performances of hcp RhB NPs are attributed to the upshift of d-band center, enhanced NO adsorption/activation profile, and greatly reduced energy barrier of the rate-determining step.A demonstrative Zn-NO battery is assembled using hcp RhB NPs as the cathode and delivers a peak power density of 4.33 mW cm−2,realizing simultaneous NO removal,NH3 synthesis, and electricity output. 展开更多

The precise tuning of magnetic nanoparticle size and magnetic domains, thereby shaping magnetic properties. However, the dynamic evolution mechanisms of magnetic domain configurations in relation to electromagnetic(EM)attenuation behavior remain poorly understood. To address this gap,a thermodynamically controlled periodic coordination strategy is proposed to achieve precise modulation of magnetic nanoparticle spacing. This approach unveils the evolution of magnetic domain configurations, progressing from individual to coupled and ultimately to crosslinked domain configurations.A unique magnetic coupling phenomenon surpasses the Snoek limit in low-frequency range, which is observed through micromagnetic simulation. The crosslinked magnetic configuration achieves effective low-frequency EM wave absorption at 3.68 GHz,encompassing nearly the entire C-band.This exceptional magnetic interaction significantly enhances radar camouflage and thermal insulation properties.Additionally,a robust gradient metamaterial design extends coverage across the full band(2–40 GHz),effectively mitigating the impact of EM pollution on human health and environment. This comprehensive study elucidates the evolution mechanisms of magnetic domain configurations, addresses gaps in dynamic magnetic modulation, and provides novel insights for the development of high-performance,low-frequency EM wave absorption materials. 展开更多

The effects of the initial cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations (100-3000 mg-1) on hail properties were investigated in an idealized non-severe hail storm experiment using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, with the National Severe Storms Laboratory 2-moment microphysics scheme. The initial CCN concentration (CCNC) had obvious non-monotonic effects on the mixing ratio, number concentrations, and radius of hail, both in clouds and at the surface, with a CCNC threshold between 300 and 500 mg-1. An increasing CCNC is conducive (suppressive) to the amount of surface hail precipitation below (above) the CCNC threshold. The non-monotonic effects were due to both the thermodynamics and microphysics. Below the CCNC threshold, the mixing ratios with the increasing CCNC, resulting in more latent heat released of cloud droplets and ice crystals increased dramatically from condensation and frozen between 4 and 8 km and intensified updraft volume. The extent of the riming process, which is the primary process for hail production, increased dramatically. Above the CCNC threshold, the mixing ratio of cloud droplets and ice crystals increased continuously, but the maximum updraft volume was weakened because of reduced frozen latent heating at low level. The smaller ice crystals reduced the formation of hail and smaller clouds, with decreased rain water reducing riming efficiency so that graupel and hail also decreased with increasing CCNC, which is unfavorable for hail growth. 展开更多

The impact of moist physics on the sensitive areas identified by conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation(CNOP)is examined based on four typical heavy rainfall cases in northern China through performing numerical experiments with and without moist physics. Results show that the CNOP with moist physics identifies sensitive areas corresponding to both the lower-(850−700 hPa)and upper-level(300−100 hPa)weather systems, while the CNOP without moist physics fails to capture the sensitive areas at lower levels. The reasons for the CNOP peaking at different levels can be explained in both algorithm and physics aspects.Firstly, the gradient of the cost function with respect to initial perturbations peaks at the upper level without moist physics which results in the upper-level peak of the CNOP,while it peaks at both the upper and lower levels with moist physics which results in both the upper-and lower-level peaks of the CNOP.Secondly, the upper-level sensitive area is associated with high baroclinicity, and these dynamic features can be captured by both CNOPs with and without moist physics. The lower-level sensitive area is associated with moist processes, and this thermodynamic feature can be captured only by the CNOP with moist physics. This result demonstrates the important contribution of the initial error of lower-level systems that are related to water vapor transportation to the forecast error of heavy rainfall associated weather systems, which could be an important reference for heavy rainfall observation targeting. 展开更多
