Nuclear excitation by electron capture(NEEC)is a fundamental process in nuclear physics.Despite its theoretical framework established nearly half a century ago,the experimental confirmation of NEEC remains elusive because of significant technical challenges.A notable effort to validate NEEC experimentally involved the enhanced ^(93m)Mo isomer-depletion experiment,which was ultimately hindered by substantial noise interference.This mini-review provides a brief historical overview of NEEC studies and explores the role of NEEC processes in astrophysical environments and laser-induced plasmas.Several platforms have been proposed to facilitate the observation of NEEC,including traditional cooling-storage rings,ion accelerators,and electron beam ion traps.These approaches aim to enhance the nuclear excitation rate,thereby improving the signal-to-noise ratio.In addition,the employment of exotic vortex beams is discussed as a potential methodological approach to address these challenges. 展开更多

ENN He Long-2(EHL-2)is the next-generation large mega-Ampere(MA)spherical torus(ST)proposed and funded by the ENN company.The design parameters are:Ti0>30 keV,n_(e0)~1×10^(20)m^(-3),Ip~3 MA,Bt~3 T.One of the biggest challenges of EHL-2 is how to achieve several MA current flat-tops with limited voltage-seconds(Vs)of the center solenoid(CS)coils.In order to minimize the consumption of Vs,a fully non-inductive start-up by electron cyclotron resonance heating(ECRH)will be applied in EHL-2.The ramp-up phase will be accomplished with the synergetic mode between the CS and non-inductive methods.The strategy of non-inductive start-up and ramp-up with synergetic mode has been verified on EXL-50U’s experiments.Based on this strategy,numerical simulations indicate the feasibility of EHL-2 achieving 3 MA plasma current.A high-performance steady-state scenario with Ip~1.5 MA is also designed.In this scenario,the bootstrap current fraction fBS>70%,the safety factor q at the magnetic axis q0>2,the minimum safety factor qmin>1,the poloidal betaβp>3 and normalized betaβN>2.3.Each design iteration integrates the validation of physical models with the constraints of engineering implementation,gradually optimizing the performance of the heating and current drive(H&CD)systems.Numerical simulation results for general auxiliary H&CD systems such as neutral beam injection(NBI),electron cyclotron(EC)wave,ion cyclotron wave(ICW),and lower hybrid wave(LHW)are presented.These simulation results ensure that the 31 MW H&CD systems comprehensively cover all scenarios while maintaining engineering feasibility. 展开更多

The in-flight heating process of cerium dioxide(CeO_(2))powders was investigated through experiments and numerical simulations.In the experiment,CeO_(2)powder(average size of 30μm)was injected into radio-frequency(RF)argon plasma,and the temperatures were measured using a DPV-2000 monitor.A model combining the electromagnetism,thermal flow,and heat transfer characteristics of powder during in-flight heating in argon plasma was proposed.The melting processes of CeO_(2)powders of different diameters,with and without thermal resistance effect,were investigated.Results show that the heating process of CeO_(2)powder particles consists of three main stages,one of which is relevant to a dimensionless parameter known as the Biot number.When the Biot value≥0.1,thermal resistance increases significantly,especially for the larger powders.The predicted temperature of the particles at the outlet(1800–2880 K)is in good agreement with the experimental result. 展开更多

The process of riming significantly impacts the microphysical characteristics of clouds.This study uses aircraft and radar observation data in stratiform clouds with convection embedded that occurred in the central and southern regions of North China on 22 May 2017.The microphysical structural characteristics and processes near the embedded convection core and in the stratiform cloud are analyzed comparatively.Particular attention is given to the effect of riming on the microphysical properties near the upper boundary of the melting layer and to the factors influencing riming efficiency.The collaborative observations reveal that the particle size distributions observed near the convection core and in the stratiform region are close,while the particle properties like habit and riming degree are quite different.Above the melting layer,larger plate-like ice particles and supercooled water droplets(D>50μm)are more abundant near the convective core,leading to higher collision efficiencies between ice particles and supercooled water droplets.Larger fluctuation amplitudes of vertical airflow near the convective core also contribute to the increased riming activity and the formation of more heavily rimed particles,such as graupel.Furthermore,in situ measurements from airborne probes also revealed that above the melting layer,the riming process involves two stages:the mass of snow crystals grows as supercooled droplets merge internally without changing size,followed by external freezing that significantly enlarges the crystals. 展开更多

We report first-principles predictions of a cage-like polymeric nitrogen phase(cage-N)composed of interlocked N10 clusters stabilized by mixed sp^(2)/sp^(3) hybridization.Under high pressure,cage-N exhibits exceptional mechanical performance,including an ideal compressive strength of 343 GPa at a pressure of 300 GPa,~33% higher than that of diamond.This ultrahigh strength arises from the synergistic interplay between its three-dimensional covalent framework and hybridized bonding topology,which enables isotropic stress accommodation and dynamic electronic rearrangement.These results establish cage-N as a promising non-carbon ultrahard material and provide a bonding-driven route toward designing superhard frameworks under extreme conditions. 展开更多

The optical tweezer experiment with neutral atoms is widely used for quantum information research.Here,we present a compact dual magneto-optical trap(MOT)setup for a two-species optical tweezer.Rubidium(Rb)atoms are directly captured using a vapor MOT,while potassium(K)atoms are collected via a 2-stage MOT.Both the quadratic and gradient magnetic fields required for the MOT and Zeeman slower are created by permanent magnets.With the help of the Zeeman slower,the K MOT loading efficiency is enhanced by a factor of three.After the MOT stage,we apply D_(1) gray molasses to reduce the temperature of the K atoms to 9μK.Using this apparatus,both Rb and K are loaded into the optical tweezer. 展开更多

Research on neutron-induced fission product yields of^(232)Th is crucial for understanding the competition between symmetric and asymmetric fission in actinide nuclei.However,obtaining complete isotopic yield distributions over a wide range of neutron energies remains a challenge.In this study,a Bayesian neural network model was developed to predict the independent(IND)and cumulative fission yields of^(232)Th under neutron irradiation at various incident energies.To address the limited availability of experimental data for the analysis of IND mass distributions,we substituted mass-number-based yields with the yields of specific isotopes.Furthermore,physical phenomena or quantities,such as the odd-even effect and isospin,were introduced as constraints to enhance the physical consistency of the predictions.The impact of these constraints was evaluated using mass-chain yield distributions and their dependence on energy.Incorporating physical constraints significantly improves the prediction accuracy,yielding more reliable and physically meaningful fission yield data for nuclear physics and reactor design applications. 展开更多

Simultaneous lidar observations of the sporadic Ni layer and sporadic Na layer in the MLT

Here we report on simultaneous lidar observations of sporadic Ni(Nis)layers and sporadic Na(Nas)layers in the atmosphere over Yanqing,Beijing(40.42°N,116.02°E)from April 2019 to October 2022.During 343 nights of observation,68 Nis and 56 Nas were observed.The seasonal variation of Nis and Nas was also obtained,with the highest occurrence of Nis being in July(43%)and that of Nas being in June(61%).We found that the seasonal variation of Nis is similar to that of Nas and that both occur more frequently in summer than in winter.In addition,we found 23 events in which Nis and Nas occur simultaneously.The average peak altitude of Nas is approximately 1 km higher than that of Nis,and the peak density ratio of Nas to Nis is approximately 5,which is half the density ratio of the two main layers.Additionally,the strength factor for Nas is smaller than that for Nis.Through data analysis of sporadic E layers(Es),we found that Nis and Nas has a significant correlation with Es.The neutralization rates of Ni^(+)/Na^(+)were calculated according to the dissociative recombination reaction of Ni^(+)/Na^(+)and the WACCM-Ni(Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model of Ni).The production rates of Ni and Na were estimated to be approximately 1:4.4,which is consistent with the density ratio of Nis to Nas.The results showed that the neutralization reaction of Ni+,Na+,and electrons in Es is the main reason for the formation of the Nis layer and the Nas layer. 展开更多

We present the preparation and measurement of the radioactive isotope^(37)Ar,which was produced using thermal neutrons from a reactor,as a calibration source for liquid xenon time projection chambers.^(37)Ar is a low-energy calibration source with a half-life of 35.01 days,making it suitable for calibration in the low-energy region of liquid xenon dark-matter experiments.Radioactive isotope^(37)Ar was produced by irradiating ^(36)Ar with thermal neutrons.It was subsequently measured in a gaseous xenon time projection chamber(GXe TPC)to validate its radioactivity.Our results demonstrate that^(37)Ar is an effective and viable calibration source that offers precise calibration capabilities in the low-energy domain of xenon-based detectors. 展开更多

The electronic states of the smallest boron cluster B_(3)with excitation energies up to 5 e V are systematically investigated.Geometries and spectroscopic constants for the low-lying electronic states were calculated using the multireference configuration interaction method with Davidson correction(MRCI+Q).The nondegenerate 1^(2)B_(2)and 2^(2)A_(1)states are arising from the degenerate~2E~′state in D_(3h)symmetry,this is also the case for 2^(2)B_(2)and 3~2A_(1).Furthermore,vertical excitation energies,oscillator strengths,main configurations,and transitions of the excited state of B_(3)were determined.Notably,the theoretically predicted wavelengths for the X^(2)A_(1)→2^(2)A_(1)and X^(2)A_(1)→2^(2)B_(2)electronic transitions(728 nm and 457 nm,respectively)exhibit excellent agreements with experimental absorption bands observed at 736 nm and 458 nm.These theoretical findings provide critical insights into the electronic structure and geometric configuration of the B_(3)cluster. 展开更多

Optimizing the microchannel design of the next generation of chips requires an understanding of the in situ property evolution of the chip-based materials under fast cooling.This work overcomes the conventional reliance on reheating data of melt-quenched glasses by demonstrating direct observations of glass transition on cooling curves utilizing the most advanced fast differential scanning calorimetry.By leveraging an MEMS chip sensor that allows for rapid heat extraction from microgram-sized samples to a purged gas coolant,the device is able to reach ultra-fast cooling rates of up to 40,000 K·s^(−1).Four thermal regions are identified by examining the cooling behaviors of two metallic glasses.This is because the actual rate of the specimen can differ from the programmed rate,especially at high set rate when the actual rate decreases before the glass transition is completed.We define the operational window for reliable cooling curve analysis,build models with empirical and theoretical analyses to determine the maximum feasible cooling rate,and demonstrate how optimizing sample mass and environment temperature broaden this window.The method avoids deceptive structural relaxation effects verified by fictivetemperature analysis and permits the capture of full glass transition during cooling. 展开更多

MnO_(x)-CeO_(2)catalysts for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction(SCR)of NO remain vulnerable to water and sulfur poisoning,limting their practical applications.Herein,we report a hydrophobic-modified MnO_(x)-CeO_(2)catalyst that achieves enhanced NO conversion rate and stability under harsh conditions.The catalyst was synthesized by decorating MnOx crystals with amorphous CeO_(2),followed by loading hydrophobic silica on the external surfaces.The hydrophobic silica allowed the adsorption of NH_(3)and NO and diffusion of H,suppressed the adsorption of H_(2)O,and prevented SO_(2)interaction with the Mn active sites,achieving selective molecular discrimination at the catalyst surface.At 120℃,under H_(2)O and SO_(2)exposure,the optimal hydrophobic catalyst maintains 82%NO conversion rate compared with 69%for the unmodified catalyst.The average adsorption energies of NH_(3),H_(2)O,and SO_(2)decreased by 0.05,0.43,and 0.52 eV,respectively.The NO reduction pathway follows the Eley-Rideal mechanism,NH_(3)^(*)+*→NH_(2)^(*)+H^(*)followed by NH_(2)^(*)+NO^(*)→N_(2)^(*)+H_(2)O^(*),with NH_(3)dehydrogenation being the rate determining step.Hydrophobic modification increased the activation energy for H atom transfer,leading to a minor decrease in the NO conversion rate at 120℃.This work demonstrates a viable strategy for developing robust NH_(3)-S CR catalysts capable of efficient operation in water-and sulfur-rich environments. 展开更多

The octupole correlations of the K^(π)=5/2^(+)ground state and the rotational spectrum built on it in^(229)Th are studied using the microscopic relativistic density functional theory on a three-dimensional lattice space and the reflection-asymmetric triaxial particle rotor model.It is found that^(229)Th has a ground state with static axial octupole and quadrupole deformations.The occurrence of octupole correlations,driven by the octupole deformation,is analyzed through the evolution of single-particle levels around the Fermi surface.The experimental energy spectrum and the electromagnetic transition probabilities,including B(E2)and B(M1),are reasonably well reproduced. 展开更多

First-principles calculations based on density functional theory(DFT)have had a significant impact on chemistry,physics,and materials science,enabling in-depth exploration of the structural and electronic properties of a wide variety of materials.Among different implementations of DFT,the plane-wave method is widely used for periodic systems because of its high accuracy.However,this method typically requires a large number of basis functions for large systems,leading to high computational costs.Localized basis sets,such as the muffin-tin orbital(MTO)method,have been introduced to provide a more efficient description of electronic structure with a reduced basis set,albeit at the cost of reduced computational accuracy.In this work,we propose an optimization strategy using machine-learning techniques to automate MTO basis-set parameters,thereby improving the accuracy and efficiency of MTO-based calculations.Default MTO parameter settings primarily focus on lattice structure and give less consideration to element-specific differences.In contrast,our optimized parameters incorporate both structural and elemental information.Based on these converged parameters,we successfully recovered missing bands for CrTe_(2).For the other three materials—Si,GaAs,and CrI_(3)—we achieved band improvements of up to 2 e V.Furthermore,the generalization of the machine-learned method is validated by perturbation,strain,and elemental substitution,resulting in improved band structures.Additionally,lattice-constant optimization for Ga As using the converged parameters yields closer agreement with experiment. 展开更多

High-precision optical frequency measurement serves as a cornerstone of modern science and technology,enabling advancements in fields ranging from fundamental physics to quantum information technologies.Obtaining precise photon frequencies,especially in the ultraviolet or even extreme ultraviolet regimes,is a key goal in both light–matter interaction experiments and engineering applications.High-order harmonic generation(HHG)is an ideal light source for producing such photons.In this work,we propose an optical temporal interference model(OTIM)that establishes an analogy with multi-slit Fraunhofer diffraction(MSFD)to manipulate fine-frequency photon generation by exploiting the temporal coherence of HHG processes.Our model provides a unified physical framework for three distinct non-integer HHG generation schemes:single-pulse,shaped-pulse,and laser pulse train approaches,which correspond to single-MSFD-like,double-MSFD-like,and multi-MSFD-like processes,respectively.Arbitrary non-integer HHG photons can be obtained using our scheme.Our approach provides a new perspective for accurately measuring and controlling photon frequencies in fields such as frequency comb technology,interferometry,and atomic clocks. 展开更多

Impact of decoherence on the metrological advantage of weak-value amplification

We present a theoretical investigation of weak-value amplification(WVA)under decoherence,quantifying its metrological capabilities through the quantum Fisher information(QFI).By modeling decoherence via Kraus operators acting before and after the weak measurement interaction,we derive exact expressions for the QFI governing parameter estimation of a weak coupling strength.These analytical results reveal the fundamental limitation imposed by decoherence on the QFI achievable via WVA.From these results,the optimal post-selection state that maximizes the QFI can be derived for different noise environments.Through paradigmatic examples,including amplitude damping and depolarizing channels,we demonstrate a key distinction:the optimal post-selection evolves with the noise strength in the amplitude damping channel,but is fixed in the depolarizing channel.This work provides both theoretical insights and practical guidance for optimizing metrological schemes based on WVA in realistic decoherent environments. 展开更多

A RadioFrequency Quadrupole(RFQ)cooler-buncher system was developed and implemented in a collinear laser spectroscopy setup.This system converts a continuous ion beam into short bunches while enhancing the beam quality and reducing the energy spread.The functionality of the RFQ cooler buncher was verified through offline tests with stable rubidium and indium beams delivered from a surface ion source and a laser ablation ion source,respectively.Bunched ion beams with a full width at half maximum of approximately 2μs in the time-of-flight spectrum were successfully achieved with a transmission efficiency exceeding 60%.The implementation of the RFQ cooler-buncher system also significantly improved the overall transmission efficiency of the collinear laser spectroscopy setup. 展开更多
