The aim of this study was to explore nurse managers’ perceptions of ethical conflicts when caring for older patients who wish to die. A qualitative method was employed and data were collected by means of a focus group interview with eight nurse managers. The results revealed one theme: A struggle due to responsibility for decision making and four sub-themes:?Understanding the meaning of free will, wondering about how serious the death wish is, providing more worthy elder care and lack of competent healthcare professionals to provide safe care. Nurse managers’ have no structure for bringing ethical conflicts to the attention of their leaders or the next level of the organization. Consequently, they appear to need supervision, support and clear, flexible lines of communication with leadership.展开更多

In that respect, there has been an increasing interest in the effect of working conditions on patient safety, and whether understaffing and adverse events are correlated. This paper therefore reports results from a study of under- staffing of nurses understood as a lack of nurses available to conduct the tasks required of them. This implies that nurses are forced to ignore or postpone important tasks, thereby compromising patient safety. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to increase the knowledge of understaffing of hospital nurses, and the consequences that understaffing may have on patient safety. Methods: A literature search of the databases Chinal, Medline, Cochrane library, Isi Web of Science and Academic Search premiere was conducted in the period January 2014 to February, 2016. Results: Results are categorized into two main themes and four subthemes. The first main theme describes the direct relationship between understaffing and patient safety. Poor staffing increases the risk of mortality, and adverse conditions such as pressure ulcers, deep vein thrombosis and hospital-related infections. The second main theme relates to the indirect implications of understaffing for patient safety. These implications pertain to the lack of time that nurses could give each patient, limitations in the quality of nursing, and challenges in safe medication administration. Conclusions: The study documents the relationship between understaffing of nurses and adverse events in hospitals, revealingthat understaffing of nurses is a risk factor for hospitalized patients.展开更多

The international relevance of patient safety has expanded, as have the models of person-centred care. Inspired by this new trend, we collated and summarized the literature for evidence of the two topics. The study was guided by Russell, Whittemore and Knafl’s integrative review framework. An electronic database search was conducted for relevant articles from 2005 to 2016. This review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The structure and process of the evaluation of the evidence are described and the findings interpreted by means of a thematic synthesis. One theme emerged: trustful, safe communication in the relationship between the patient, family members and healthcare professionals and two domains;safety culture and multidisciplinary capacity building. The dominant dimension in the safety culture domain is respectful communication, which implies sharing experiences that lead to a sense of control during labour and birth and is related to the women’s feeling of personal capacity. The dominant dimensions in the multidisciplinary capacity building domain are collaborative teamwork, coordination and risk management, knowledge sharing and patient-centred communication. In conclusion, to enhance patient safety, it is necessary to develop patient-focused, evidence-based skills and guidelines as well as a supportive organization. Due to their interaction with patients, midwives’ communication competence on the part of midwives is essential for supporting the birth and fulfilling the women’s needs and expectations.展开更多

With the increasing integration of renewable energy resources into the grid, forecasting the demand for electricity is critical at all levels, from the distribution to the household. Most existing forecasting methods, however, can be considered black-box models as a result of deep digitalization enablers, such as deep neural networks, which remain difficult to interpret by humans. Moreover, capture of the inter-dependencies among variables presents a significant challenge for multivariate time series forecasting. In this paper we propose eXplainable Causal Graph Neural Network (X-CGNN) for multivariate electricity demand forecasting that overcomes these limitations. As part of this method, we have intrinsic and global explanations based on causal inferences as well as local explanations based on post-hoc analyses. We have performed extensive validation on two real-world electricity demand datasets from both the household and distribution levels to demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance.展开更多

文摘Wind turbines are continuously exposed to harsh environmental and operational conditions throughout their lifetime, leading to the gradual degradation of their components. If left unaddressed, these degraded components can adversely affect turbine performance and significantly increase the likelihood of failure. As degradation progresses, the risk of failure escalates, making it essential to implement appropriate risk control measures. One effective risk control method involves performing inspection and monitoring activities that provide valuable insights into the condition of the structure, enabling the formulation of appropriate maintenance strategies based on accurate assessments.Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition(SCADA)systems offer low-resolution condition monitoring data that can be used for fault detection, diagnosis, quantification, prognosis, and maintenance planning. One commonly used method involves predicting power generation using SCADA data and comparing it against measured power generation.Significant discrepancies between predicted and measured values can indicate suboptimal operation, natural aging,or unnatural faults.Various predictive models, including parametric and non-parametric(statistical)approaches,have been proposed for estimating power generation. However, the imperfect nature of these models introduces uncertainties in the predicted power output.Additionally,SCADA monitoring data is prone to uncertainties arising from various sources. The presence of uncertainties from these two sources-imperfect predictive models and imperfect SCADA data-introduces uncertainty in the predicted power generation. This uncertainty complicates the process of determining whether discrepancies between measured and predicted values are significant enough to warrant maintenance actions.Depending on the nature of uncertainty-aleatory,arising from inherent randomness,or epistemic, stemming from incomplete knowledge or limited data-different analytical approaches, like Probabilistic and Possibilistic, can be applied for effective management. Both,Probabilistic and Possibilistic,Approaches offer distinct advantages and limitations. The Possibilistic Approach, rooted in fuzzy set theory,is particularly well suited for addressing epistemic uncertainties, especially those caused by imprecision or sparse statistical information. This makes it especially relevant for applications such as wind turbines, where it is often challenging to construct accurate probability distribution functions for environmental parameters due to limited sensor data from hard-to-access locations. This research focuses on developing a methodology for identifying suboptimal operation in wind turbines by comparing Grid Produced Power(Measured Produced Power)with Predicted Produced Power. To achieve this, the paper introduces a Possibilistic Approach for power prediction that accounts for uncertainties stemming from both model imperfections and measurement errors in SCADA data. The methodology combines machine learning models, used to establish predictive relationships between environmental inputs and power output, with a Possibilistic Framework that represents uncertainty through possibility distribution functions based on fuzzy logic and interval analysis.A real-world case study using operational SCADA data demonstrates the approach, with XGBoost selected as the final predictive model due to its strong accuracy and computational efficiency.

文摘Nanofluids have great potential for solar energy harvesting due to their suitable optical and thermophysical properties. One of the promising applications of nanofluids is utilization in solar collectors with the direct absorption of light(DASC).The design of a DASC requires detailed knowledge of the optical properties of nanofluids, which can be significantly affected by the particle size distribution. The paper presents the method to take into account the particle size distribution when calculating nanofluid extinction spectra. To validate the proposed model, the particle size distribution and spectral absorbance were measured for aqueous suspension with multi-walled graphite nanotubes;the minimum size of primary nanoparticles was 49 nm.The proposed model is compared with experiments demonstrating the concentration averaged and maximum discrepancies of 6.6%and 32.2%against 12.6%and 77.7%for a model assuming a monosized suspension.
文摘The complexity of the healthcare organization with emphasis on efficiency and productivity has led to an increase in value conflicts as well as moral and ethical conflicts. Consequently, they appear to need supervision, support and clear, flexible lines of communication with leadership.
文摘Introduction: Patient safety and the occurrence of adverse events in hospitals is a topic which has been widely addressed over the last decades. Conclusions: The study documents the relationship between understaffing of nurses and adverse events in hospitals, revealingthat understaffing of nurses is a risk factor for hospitalized patients.

文摘The aim was to evaluate the current state of knowledge pertaining to patient safety and its link to person-centred care. Due to their interaction with patients, midwives’ communication competence on the part of midwives is essential for supporting the birth and fulfilling the women’s needs and expectations.
文摘A network intrusion detection system is critical for cyber security against llegitimate attacks. In terms of feature perspectives, network traffic may include a variety of elements such as attack reference, attack type,a subcategory of attack, host information, malicious scripts, etc. In terms of network perspectives, network traffic may contain an imbalanced number of harmful attacks when compared to normal traffic. It is challenging to identify a specific attack due to complex features and data imbalance issues. To address these issues, this paper proposes an Intrusion Detection System using transformer-based transfer learning for Imbalanced Network Traffic(IDS-INT).IDS-INT uses transformer-based transfer learning to learn feature interactions in both network feature representation and imbalanced data.First, detailed information about each type of attack is gathered from network interaction descriptions, which include network nodes, attack type, reference, host information, etc.Second, the transformer-based transfer learning approach is developed to learn detailed feature representation using their semantic anchors.Third, the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique(SMOTE)is implemented to balance abnormal traffic and detect minority attacks.Fourth, the Convolution Neural Network(CNN)model is designed to extract deep features from the balanced network traffic. Finally, the hybrid approach of the CNN-Long Short-Term Memory(CNN-LSTM)model is developed to detect different types of attacks from the deep features.Detailed experiments are conducted to test the proposed approach using three standard datasets,i.e.,UNsWNB15,CIC-IDS2017,and NSL-KDD.An explainable AI approach is implemented to interpret the proposed method and develop a trustable model.
文摘Purpose:This article examines how early childhood curriculum documents in two culturally different contexts are associated with current concepts of sustainability and principles of early childhood education for sustainability(ECEfS)in China and Norway.Design/Approach/Methods:Applying critical document analysis, the study explores a number of landmark curriculum documents from China and Norway, comparing the ways in which ECEfS is conceptualized, including the concept of sustainability, children as agents of change for sustainability, and sustainability in young children’s everyday lives.Findings:Corresponding to the analytical framework,China and Norway attach different importance to the three dimensions of sustainability-social-cultural,economic,and environmental. For example,Norway has a more autonomous view of children’s agency, while China gives more emphasis to teachers’support. The two countries also have different perspectives on how to work with families and communities based on significantly different traditions and institutions. The comparative document analysis argues that predominant cultural dimensions in each context, such as collectivist and individualistic factors, may shape the understandings of sustainability in each country’s early years’curriculum documents.Originality/Values:By broadening the focus on the social-cultural aspects of sustainability, this study extends the development of a culturally inclusive understanding of the concept of sustainability and contextualized/localized approaches to ECEfS across the globe.

文摘Purpose:To identify co-produced multi-stakeholder perspectives important for successful widespread physically active learning(PAL) adoption and implementation. Methods:A total of 35 stakeholders(policymakers n=9;commercial education sector,n=8;teachers,n=3;researchers,n=15) attended a design thinking PAL workshop.Participants formed 5 multi-disciplinary groups with at least 1 representative from each stakeholder group. Each group, facilitated by a researcher, undertook 2 tasks:(1) using Post-it Notes, the following question was answered:within the school day, what are the opportunities for learning combined with movement?and(2) structured as a washing-line task, the following question was answered:how can we establish PAL as the norm? All discussions were audio-recorded and transcribed.Inductive analyses were conducted by 4 authors. After the analyses were complete, the main themes and subthemes were assigned to 4 predetermined categories:(1) PAL design and implementation,(2) priorities for practice,(3) priorities for policy,and(4) priorities for research. Results:The following were the main themes for PAL implementation:opportunities for PAL within the school day, delivery environments, learning approaches, and the intensity of PAL.The main themes for the priorities for practice included teacher confidence and competence, resources to support delivery, and community of practice. The main themes for the policy for priorities included self-governance,the Office for Standards in Education,Children’s Services, and Skill, policy investment in initial teacher training, and curriculum reform. The main themes for the research priorities included establishing a strong evidence base,school-based PAL implementation, and a whole-systems approach. Conclusion:The present study is the first to identify PAL implementation factors using a combined multi-stakeholder perspective. To achieve wider PAL adoption and implementation, future interventions should be evidence based and address implementation factors at the classroom level(e.g.,approaches and delivery environments),school level(e.g.,communities of practice),and policy level(e.g.,initial teacher training).
文摘Renewable energy production and the balance between production and demand have become increasingly crucial in modern power systems, necessitating accurate forecasting.Traditional deterministic methods fail to capture the inherent uncertainties associated with intermittent renewable sources and fluctuating demand patterns. This paper proposes a novel denoising diffusion method for multivariate time series probabilistic forecasting that explicitly models the interdependencies between variables through graph modeling. Our framework employs a parallel feature extraction module that simultaneously captures temporal dynamics and spatial correlations, enabling improved forecasting accuracy.Through extensive evaluation on two world real-datasets focused on renewable energy and electricity demand,we demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in probabilistic energy time series forecasting tasks.By explicitly modeling variable interdependencies and incorporating temporal information, our method provides reliable probabilistic forecasts, crucial for effective decision-making and resource allocation in the energy sector.Extensive experiments validate that our proposed method reduces the Continuous Ranked Probability Score(CRPS)by 2.1%-70.9%,Mean Absolute Error(MAE)by 4.4%-52.2%,and Root Mean Squared Error(RMSE)by 7.9%-53.4%over existing methods on two real-world datasets.

文摘Purpose:This article aims to describe and discuss what local weather landscapes mean to children and how weather implies exploring bodily sensations and capabilities. It does so by following the work of a community artist, working as a kindergarten teacher, over 1 year.Design/Approach/Methods:Through a narrative inquiry approach, which also includes studies of archival data and field notes,we analyze how local and personally experienced weather events imply what we call“cultures of exploration”in institutional practices. The epistemologies cross the specter of cultural–historical, pragmatic, and deep ecological philosophy.Findings:Through this study,we exemplify how experiencing weather is intertwined into pedagogical practices like habituating the body to cope with cold and wet weather, learning about danger in a wild natural landscape, and valuing species as a powerful practice. The descriptions exemplify“cultures of exploration”as a pedagogical approach.Originality/Value:In this time of an increasing climate crisis on our planet, the value of our findings is to foreground new insights, awareness, and knowledge relevant to children;to early-childhood education;and to life and societies at large. We can thus develop methods to better care for, protect, and educate children. This article has the potential to show how weather events are intertwined with everyday institutional practices—as well as how children, through exploration, learn to cope with seasonal weather landscapes and local cultural adaptations.
文摘Background and objective Metabolic associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)is associated with abnormal lipid metabolism.Mitochondrial dysfunction is considered an important factor in the onset of MAFLD,whereas altered fatty acid composition has been linked to the severity of the disease.Tetradecylthioacetic acid(TTA),shown to induce mitochondrial proliferation and alter the fatty acid composition, was used to delay the accumulation of hepatic triacylglycerol. This study aimed to evaluate how impaired mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation affects fatty acid composition by incorporating meldonium into a high-carbohydrate diet. Methods C57BL/6 mice(n=40)were fed high-carbohydrate diets supplemented with meldonium,TTA,or a combination of meldonium and TTA for 21 days.Lipid levels were determined in liver samples, and fatty acid composition was measured in both liver and plasma samples.Additionally, desaturase and elongase activities were estimated. The hepatic activities and gene expression levels of enzymes involved in fatty acid metabolism were measured in liver samples, whereas carnitines, their precursors, and acylcarnitines were measured in plasma samples. Results The meldonium-induced depletion of L-carnitine and mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation was confirmed by reduced plasma levels of L-carnitine and acylcarnitines.Principal component analyses of the hepatic fatty acid composition revealed clustering dependent on meldonium and TTA.The meldonium-induced increase in hepatic triacylglycerol levels correlated negatively with estimated activities of elongases and was associated with higher estimated activities of delta-6 desaturase(D6D;C18:4n-3/C18:3n-3 and C18:3n-6/C18:2n-6),and increased circulating levels of C18:4n-3 and C18:3n-6(gamma-linolenic acid).TTA mitigated meldonium-induced triacylglycerol levels by 80%and attenuated the estimated D6D activities, and elongation of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFAs).TTA also attenuated the meldonium-mediated reduction of C24:1n-9(nervonic acid),possibly by stimulating Elovl5 and increased elongation of erucic acid(C22:1n-9)to nervonic acid. The hepatic levels of nervonic acid and the estimated activity of n-6 PUFA elongation correlated negatively with the hepatic triacylglycerol levels, while the estimated activities of D6D correlated positively. Conclusion Circulating levels of gamma-linolenic acid, along with reduced estimated elongation of n-6 PUFAs and D6D desaturation activities, were associated with hepatic triacylglycerol levels.
文摘Purpose:The article investigates how to make a broader understanding of sustainability relevant for early childhood education(ECE)guided by the four dimensions suggested by United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization:ecological, economic and social/cultural sustainability, and good governance.Design/Approach/Methods:Previous research on ECE on sustainability is discussed in relation to the four dimensions and to Biesta’s concepts of socialization, qualification, and subjectification.Findings:The investigation finds that all four dimensions are necessary in ECE for sustainability, and it suggests how the dimensions can be understood, how they may overlap, and how they can be contradictive.Originality/Value:The article depicts how children’s opportunities to engage and to disturb established ways of thinking can be facilitated through all dimensions.
文摘Purpose:Taking a particular example of an international partnership programme, this article aims to discuss kindergartens’participation in international partnership programmes as compelling vehicles for promoting early childhood education for sustainability(ECEfS).The partnership programme included Western Norway University of Applied Sciences,Beijing Normal University,East China Normal University, and kindergartens in Norway and China.Researchers, postgraduate students, kindergarten principals, and teachers participated in the programme, their key concern being to promote competencies for sustainability and agents for change.Design/Approach/Methods:The article is based upon research with a phenomenological approach to Chinese and Norwegian kindergarten teachers’and principals’experiences of participating in an international partnership programme. The data for this article consisted of reflective notes from the teachers and principals and recordings of teachers’and principals’reflections in a joint seminar in the kindergarten network.Findings:This article argues that ethical normative, dialogical, and anticipatory approaches are pivotal within international ECEfS partnership programmes.Originality/Value:The article has the potential to address international partnership programmes, involving different stakeholders,as vital in promoting ECEfS.It also urges international partnership programmes to promote glocality in ECEfS(i.e.,local situatedness with global awareness).
文摘The Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)as an ambitious and universal agenda to transform our world have issued the world a bold challenge:Provide all children with quality early childhood development, care, and preprimary education by 2030(United Nations[UN],2015).As a key instrument to achieve the SDGs,education for sustainable development(ESD)“empowers learners to take informed decisions and responsible actions for environmental integrity, economic viability and a just society for present and future generations”(United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization[UNESCO],2017,p.7).International recognition of ESD as a key enabler for sustainability has been growing steadily and expanding to different stakeholders, which encourages early childhood education(ECE)to be more active in the transformative process(Engdahl,2015;United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund,2019;World Organi-zation for Early Childhood Education[OMEP],2017).
文摘High-utility itemset mining(HUIM)can consider not only the profit factor but also the profitable factor, which is an essential task in data mining. However, most HUIM algorithms are mainly developed on a single machine, which is inefficient for big data since limited memory and processing capacities are available.A parallel efficient high-utility itemset mining(P-EFIM)algorithm is proposed based on the Hadoop platform to solve this problem in this paper. In P-EFIM,the transaction-weighted utilization values are calculated and ordered for the itemsets with the MapReduce framework. Then the ordered itemsets are renumbered, and the low-utility itemsets are pruned to improve the dataset utility. In the Map phase, the P-EFIM algorithm divides the task into multiple independent subtasks. It uses the proposed S-style distribution strategy to distribute the subtasks evenly across all nodes to ensure load-balancing.Furthermore,the P-EFIM uses the EFIM algorithm to mine each subtask dataset to enhance the performance in the Reduce phase.Experiments are performed on eight datasets, and the results show that the runtime performance of P-EFIM is significantly higher than that of the PHUI-Growth,which is also HUIM algorithm based on the Hadoop framework.
文摘Forecasting electricity demand is an essential part of the smart grid to ensure a stable and reliable power grid. We have performed extensive validation on two real-world electricity demand datasets from both the household and distribution levels to demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance.

文摘Around the world, early childhood teachers are recognized as playing a crucial role in improving children's everyday lives and strengthening their learning abilities.Consequently, explicating the professional standards of educational practice is receiving growing attention from both stakeholders—including governments, educational authorities, and parents—and early childhood teachers themselves(Campbell-Barr&Bogatic,2017;Chen et al.,2016;Havnes,2018;Hordern,2016;Oberhuemer,2005).However,despite the long recognition of children's education as an ethical task based on the values, motivation, and responsibility of teachers(Afdal&Afdal,2019;Campbell,2008;Chen et al.,2016;Forster,2012;Webster&Whelen,2019a),current discussions of standards for professional practice appear to neglect ethical aspects(Malone,2020).Moreover,despite growing public interest in and expectations of the role of teachers in early childhood education and care(ECEC),the profession is still struggling to achieve professional status(Havnes,2018,p.659;Oberhuemer,2005).
