Exposure to high levels of nitrates in groundwater can have adverse effects on the health of residents who use groundwater for drinking. This study aims to assess the health risk associated with the ingestion of nitrates in well water in the town of M’bahiakro. Health risk maps were created on the basis of hazard quotients (HQ) using the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) health risk assessment model. The results indicate that residents of the Koko, Dougouba and Baoulekro neighbourhoods, whatever their age, are potentially exposed to the toxic effects of NO3−during their daily intake of nitrate-contaminated well water, with reference to hazard quotients (HQ) greater than 1. Nitrate concentrations in the groundwater should therefore be controlled in order to prevent their harmful effects on the health of the population and guarantee its use in rice-growing activities in M’Bahiakro.展开更多

It constitutes a public health problem. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one treatment option. This study contributes to the search for photosensitizing molecules used in PDT. Makaluvamines have shown interesting properties in the treatment of several human cancer cell lines. The present study analyzes the ultraviolet and visible absorption spectroscopic properties of a few Makaluvamines. These have been listed in the literature and can be in neutral or charged states (protonated and methylated). The investigation is based on quantum chemical calculations. Molecular geometries and vibrational frequencies have been calculated at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level. Absorption properties in the visible and ultraviolet spectral range are measured on optimized structures using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The absorption spectra are obtained using the “Chemissian” software. The results of our calculations have allowed us to determine the absorption zones of the molecules studied, the energy gaps of the frontier orbitals, the main transitions associated with the absorption process, and their lifetimes. They have also identified four Makaluvamines (E, G, M, and L) that absorb in the therapeutic domain and may have photosensitizer properties.展开更多

The aim of this study is to contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of the coastline and the study areas with a view to mitigating and preventing the risk of coastal erosion in order to propose a coastal occupation model with planned development policies in the future. These phenomena lead to changes in the position of the coastline. After extraction, the satellite images are compiled, then superimposed and processed using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for statistical calculation of coastline change rates. A morphosedimentary study is carried out using topography and sedimentology. The topographic method is used to calculate sediment volumes using monthly profiles. The sedimentological method is used to determine the granulometric variations in the morphological units by calculating sedimentological indices. With erosion rates of −2.13 m/yr and −2.17 m/yr respectively at Djiffère (Palmarin and Sangomar breccia) and Joal (Joal Fadhiouth and Ngazobil), the EPR index revealed a sediment deficit. Palmarin Ngallou and the island of Fadhiouth are undergoing accretion at rates of +1.43 m/yr and +1.14 m/yr respectively. From a topographical point of view, the respective accumulations of −13.74 m3/m of beach and −8.65 m3/m of beach at Djiffère and Joal respectively point to significant erosion on all the aerial beach units, while for the underwater beaches, accretion was noted with accumulations of +4.00 m3/m of beach and +5.94 m3/m at Djiffère and Joal respectively. As for the sedimentological results, the Mz index shows a decrease in grain size from the high beach to the surf zone. Some points show bimodal deposits, showing the impact of the dune on beach activity, confirmed by the dispersion on the Mz-sigma diagram. The three methods used in this work show that the Djiffère sector in Joal is dominated by erosion, even though accretion points can be noted.展开更多

Radial junction solar cells represent a major advancement in photovoltaic technologies, as they optimize light absorption and charge collection efficiency. The focus is on the impact of the magnetic field and temperature on the decay of transient voltage, which provides crucial information on recombination processes and the lifetime of minority carriers. The results reveal that the magnetic field tends to increase the transient voltage by directly affecting the transient electron density. Indeed, for B > 7 × 10−5 T, the magnetic field prolongs the relaxation time by increasing the transient voltage amplitude. Additionally, rising temperatures accelerate (ranging from 290 K to 450 K) recombination processes, thereby reducing the transient voltage, although this effect is moderated by the presence of a magnetic field. The study highlights the complex interaction between magnetic field and temperature, with significant impacts on the transient behaviour.展开更多

To do this, studied materials are respectively collected from a laterite clay pit in Ndouloumadjie Dembe (Matam, Northern Senegal) and another from a termite mound in Tattaguine (Fatick, Central Senegal). These samples are first subjected to Geotechnical identification tests. Mud bricks are then made with raw or sifted millet involucre improved to 1%, 2%, and 3% at 5 mm sieve samples. These briquettes are subjected to compression tests and thermal evaluations. Lagrange and Newton methods of numeric modelling are used to test the whole mixture points between 1% and 3% millet involucre for a better correlation between mechanical and thermal parameters. The results show that in Matam, as well as in Tattaguine, these muds, raw or improved, are of good thermomechanical quality when they are used in bricks making. And the thermomechanical coupling quality reaches a maximum situated at 2.125% for Ndouloumadjie and 2.05% for Tattaguine. These briquettes’ building quality depends on the mud content used in iron, aluminum, silica and clay. Thus, same natural materials can be used in the establishment of habitats according to their geotechnical, chemical, mechanical and thermal characteristics.展开更多

To address this challenge, generations of high-performance cotton plants of the Gossypium hirsutum L. species have been developed and are currently being commercialized. This study evaluated the impact of gin types on the agro-industrial quality of cotton in Côte d’Ivoire. To this end, cotton from the G3, R1, and R2 generations was harvested, sampled, and ginned on machines with 10 and 170 saws in the localities of Ouangolodougou, Ferkessédougou, Korhogo, M’Bengué, Boundiali, Séguéla, and Mankono, as well as at the Centre National de Recherche Agronomique CNRA) in Bouaké. The results demonstrated that cotton fibers obtained from ginning on 10-saw machines exhibited superior quality compared to those from 170-saw machines. Fiber length, fiber length uniformity, and short fiber rate exhibited the highest deviations according to gin type. The use of 170-saw gins resulted in a notable decline in quality. Conversely, micronaire index, fiber tenacity and elongation, and reflectance remained consistent across machine types. These results will enable us to more effectively regulate and advise cotton-processing factories, which primarily utilize 170-saw gins to enhance agro-industrial quality in Côte d’Ivoire. Furthermore, these results will assist breeders in incorporating them into their processes to enhance the quality of the varieties they offer to farmers.展开更多

It has few breeding constraints. A phenotypic characterization study of the Japanese quail was carried out in southern Côte d’Ivoire to gain a better understanding of this bird. The study involved 298 individuals. The phenotypes were white, black, gray, and red. A total of 11 morphometric parameters were examined. Variables were significantly different between the phenotype and sex groups. The female quail was larger than the male quail. The quail was 20.77 and 4.10 cm long. The head was supported by a 5.89 cm-long neck. The tail was 3.61 cm long. The wing length was 10.42 cm, and the thigh diameter was 2.12 cm. The tarsus was 3.39 cm long and 0.61 cm in diameter. The average quail weight was 297.06 g. The quails in this study exhibit a high degree of morphological variation between individuals in terms of plumage. These results can help develop strategies for developing and genetically improving this short-cycle resource.展开更多

A total of 43 people were interviewed using well-structured questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive methods. The results showed that local Lagoon breeders are divided into two zones: southwest and southeast. Breeders in the south-western region are generally located in two sub-prefectures of the Tabou Department (Grabo and Oulodio). Tabou’s department alone accounts for 42% of the Lagoon breed in Côte d’Ivoire. Agriculture in this area is traditionally sedentary, practiced for social reasons. On the other hand, the south-eastern zone, located in the departments of Aboisso, Adzopé, Agboville, Grand-Lahou, Jacqueville, Abidjan, Dabou and Sikensi, represents 58% of the Lagoon breeding area in Côte d’Ivoire. This second group is characterised by improved breeding. Most of the farmers interviewed in this zone breed for economic reasons. However, the risk of cross-breeding, which already affects the local Lagoon breed, could be increased by the presence of other species such as the Zebu and Ndamas, or even the Baoulé, in this south-eastern herd.展开更多

It, therefore constitutes a therapeutic target. Its morphology is extremely variable. Objective: it consisted on determining the morphological variations of the left auricle as well as their interest in the prevention of thrombi in the Senegalese. Material and Method: This study was conducted by dissecting 36 fresh hearts from Senegalese anatomical subjects with a sampling of the left atrial appendage, including specimens with normal morphological appearance. Their morphology was studied using the fresh and frozen plaster molding method. The data obtained were analyzed statistically. Results: the average age of the subjects was 33 years, with a sex ratio of 1.06, the cauliflower shape was dominant with 57% of cases and the cactus shape (4%) was less frequent. The cauliflower shape presented a clear angulation compared to the others without statistically significant differences according to age. Conclusion: This work showed a great morphological variability of the left atrial appendage. It can provide an update on the specificity of Senegalese. Taking these variations into account is important in the safe management of hemodynamic conditions and the improvement of the management of recurrent strokes.展开更多

This study aims to transform hardened cement waste stored in cement warehouses and in real estate construction sites into paving stones. This innovative solution will contribute to the protection of the environment and the reduction of inert industrial waste. To do this, paving stones based on hardened cement have been developed and characterized. The raw materials were subjected to physical and mechanical characterization tests. The hardened cement aggregates previously crushed with the 5/15 granular class were used as substitutes to replace the natural 5/15 aggregates in the hardened paving stones at contents ranging from 0 to 100%. The mechanical characterization results on the raw material showed that the hardened cement aggregate is made from lightweight aggregates. On the prepared mortar, in the fresh state, the Abrams cone slump test showed an increase in the quantity of waste water with the increase in the content of hardened cement aggregate. In the hardened state, physical (porosity, absorption and dry density) and mechanical (compression, splitting traction, 3-point bending traction and wear) characterization tests were carried out at periods of 7, 14 and 28 days of maturation in water on the cobblestones. These results show that the substitution of natural aggregates by hardened cement aggregates in increasingly large proportions leads to an improvement in compressive, flexural, splitting and wear resistance. In addition, the incorporation of hardened cement aggregate considerably slows down the mechanical degradation of the paving stones. They can, therefore, be used in road and interior or exterior floor coverings.展开更多

Because of their harmful effects on the environment and human health, synthetic nematicides are gradually being banned in several countries. This study evaluates the nematicidal activity of Datura metel oil. Datura metel seed oil was obtained using the Soxhlet extractor in hexane. The resulting oil was characterized by determining physicochemical parameters and molecular composition using GC-MS. The nematicidal activity of the oil was assessed by determining the number of dead nematodes. Physicochemical characterization gave an acidity index of 0.3% and a peroxide index of 10 meq.O2/Kg, while GC-MS analysis identified 30 molecules made up mainly of fatty acid esters, four of which represented over 74% of the oil’s total weight. The nematicidal activity of the oil, expressed in terms of mortality rate as a function of concentration, showed mortality rates of 58;69 and 79% over 48 hours of incubation at concentrations of 25, 50 and 100 µg/mL respectively. The activity observed could be linked to the high presence of the four compounds most commonly identified in the oil. These results suggest that Datura metel oil could be a promising alternative to synthetic pesticides for the control of crop pests.展开更多

Scientists from all continents have been mobilized to develop vaccines and medicines for prevention and cure. In Burkina Faso, traditional healers proposed using Scoparia dulcis L., a medicinal plant, to manage COVID-19. Method: In silico screening offers a quick drug-likeness evaluation of Scoparia dulcis L.-isolated biomolecules toward SARS-CoV-2 targets, such as Mpro protease. A review of the literature retrieved 35 biomolecules isolated from Scoparia dulcis. The potential interactions of these biomolecules with the amino acid residues of the SARS-CoV-2 Mpro protease were visualized. Affinities and probable oral route delivery were assessed using reference molecules such as remdesivir and nelfinavir. Results: The screening allowed the retention of 20 hit molecules, which had a better affinity for the target than the reference molecules remdesivir and nelfinavir, and analysis of the results identified height lead molecules with a significant interaction with the Mpro protease and being druggable. There are six flavonoids: cirsimarin, cynaroside, hydroxy-tetramethoxyflavone, gossypetin, luteolin, vitexin, one diterpene, glutinol, and one glycoside, eugenyl-glucoside. These molecules interact with methionine 6 and tyrosine 126 of SARS-CoV-2 Mpro. These two amino acids are essential for the dimerization of Mpro protease. Inhibitory action on Mpro protease can be expected from these biomolecules. Conclusion: Scoparia dulcis L. could help manage COVID-19 because it contains biomolecules that can inactivate SARS-CoV-2 Mpro.展开更多

The aim of this study was to mutagenesis upland rice varieties to improve their agronomic performance. Seeds of varieties FKR45N and FKR47N were therefore irradiated with doses 300, 350 and 400 Gy. The irradiated seeds were sown and the panicles of the M1 plants were individually harvested, and then were advanced to M4 using the “one panicle - one progeny” method. The agronomic performance of M4 lines was compared to that of their parent. The gamma ray mutagenesis has induced significant variability in five yield components, i.e., plant height, main panicle length, total numbers of tillers and productive tillers and paddy grain yield between mutant lines. The highest variabilities were shown for the total number of tillers and the number of productive tillers as well as FKR45N (CV% = 40 % and 36%) and FKR47N (CV% = 31% and 30%) mutant lines. Principal component analysis led to rank the mutant lines from each variety in three clusters. The Pearson correlation showed that the paddy grain yield was significantly and positively correlated with the number of productive tillers (r = 0.61) and plant height (r = 0.66) for FKR47N mutant lines, and these correlation coefficients were r = 0.52 and r = 0.51 for FKR45N mutant lines, respectively. Gamma-ray irradiation also induced an earliness of 50% flowering of 62 days after sowing (DAS) in two FKR45N mutant lines and 67 DAS in one of KR47N mutant lines. The paddy grain yield was improved by 120% and 20% in two FKR45N and FKR47N mutant lines, respectively. A dwarf FKR45N mutant line with an early flowering of 67 DAS and a paddy grain yield (2.34 t ha−1) was generated. These results suggested that any positive increase in the six quantitative traits will increase the paddy grain yield.展开更多

It is estimated that approximately 75%of women of childbearing age will have at least one episode of candidiasis in their lifetime. In the last decades, resistance to azoles has become a public health problem. Although studies on vulvovaginitis have been done, there is lack of VVC studies in our area. The aim of this study was to describe the etiological and resistance profiles of vulvovaginal candidiasis to standard antifungus at the Saint Camille Hospital of Ouagadougou (HOSCO), Burkina Faso. Methods: We conducted a prospective study from January 2018 to December 2022. From vulvovaginal swabs, Candida species were identified using the ChromID® Candida Agar medium and the API® Candida gallery. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed using Kirby-Bauer agar disk diffusion. Results: A total of 4789 women were sampled. The average age of sexually active women was 27.80+/−6.77 years, with extremes ranging from 15 to 64 years. Vaginal Candida infections accounted for 74.16% of the cases. The 20 - 29 age group was the most affected by vulvovaginal candidiasis. Pregnant women accounted for 28.76% of our study population. Women in the second (2nd) trimester of pregnancy had more Candida infections. Candida albicans was the most isolated species (55.12%), followed by Candida glabrata (27.64%), Candida tropicalis (6.91%), Candida famata (6.67%), Candida krusei (2.56%). All the Candida species isolated showed very high of resistance to Fluconazole (45.2%), Miconazole (23.7%) and Clotrimazole (45.7%). Conclusion: Species-specific antifungal results should always be considered to avoid antifungal resistance associated with vulvovaginal candidiasis. Identifying the causative species using vaginal fungal cultures can help guide therapy and improve outcomes for these patients.展开更多

In Cote d’Ivoire, they are commonly known as “bissap” and are of great interest to local people, who use them to make an eponymous herbal tea. This drink has potential medicinal and nutritional value (Khan et al., 2022). Nine (9) samples of dried flowers of the plant, packaged in 3 g sachets of a local Kuinafo brand, were used for physico-chemical analyses. Heavy metals, mineral salts, ash and moisture content were determined using methods adapted from the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC). The results showed the presence of heavy metals at levels whose intake should take into account the weight of the consumer in the case of mercury and arsenic (0.5 mg/Kg and 0.7 mg/Kg respectively). Apart from lead, whose level was not compliant (1.310 mg/Kg for a CSHPF standard of 0.5 mg/Kg), cadmium had a regulatory level (0.18 mg/Kg for a CSHPF standard of 0.20 mg/Kg). Nutrient intakes were significant (calcium, iron and potassium respectively at 1.79 g/100g;17.27 mg/100g and 1.76 g/100g of dried Hibiscus sabdarrifa flowers) and the moisture content suggested that the dried flowers were better preserved. The study of the physico-chemical characteristics of Hibiscus sabdarrifa flowers has enabled us to highlight the importance of quality control and the need to prevent any adverse effects on consumer health.展开更多

This dryer, which uses stones as storage material and is made of wood and plywood, was used to dry a quantity of 5 kg of fermented cocoa beans. The drying parameters for the drying curves and the drying efficiency of cocoa beans were established and studied. The drying curves were modelled from semi-empirical models. The results showed that the moisture of cocoa beans decreased from 60% to 7% in wet basis. With a solar collector and drying efficiency of 40% and 34%, respectively. And this with a maximum average difference temperature between the drying air and the ambient temperature of 13.25˚C day or night. The best concordances are obtained with R2 values of 0.9983, 0.9843, 0.9813 and 0.9837 respectively from the models of Hii, Jena and Das, Demir et al. and Alibas.展开更多

RF energy harvesting therefore becomes a promising alternative for battery dependence. This work presents the design of an RF energy harvesting system consisting mainly of a rectenna (antenna and rectification circuit) and an adaptation circuit. First of all, we designed two dipole type antennas. One operates in the GSM 900 MHz band and the other in the GSM 1800 MHz band. The performances of the proposed antennas are provided by the ANSYS HFSS software. Secondly, we proposed two rectification circuits in order to obtain conversion efficiencies at 0 dBm of 64% for the system operating at the frequency of 900 MHz and 37% for the system at the frequency of 1800 MHz RF-DC. The rectifiers used are based on Schottky diodes. For maximum transfer of power between the antenna and the rectification circuit, L-type matching circuits have been proposed. This rectifier offers DC voltage values of 806 mV for the circuit at the frequency of 900 MHz and 616 mV for the circuit at the frequency of 1800 MHz. The adaptation circuits are obtained by carrying out simulations on the ADS (Advanced Design System) software.展开更多

However, its production has stagnated due to several factors, such as anthracnose and grain molds. Thus, a study was conducted to identify local germplasms that combine high grain yield and resistance to anthracnose and grain molds under Senegalese environments. A set of 256 genotypes was assessed at Sefa, Sinthiou and Kolda research stations using an incomplete blocks design with two replications. Agro-morphological and phytopathological data were collected. The results revealed a huge phenotypic variation between the genotypes for all traits. The flowering time varied from 43 to 126 days after sowing, while the panicle length varied from 10 to 60 cm. The genotypes were generally more productive at Sinthiou (1653 Kg ha−1) compared to Kolda (164 kg ha−1) research stations. The disease parameters were significantly and positively associated, while the flowering time was strongly and positively associated to grain mold score. The genotypes were classified into three groups with plant height, panicle diameter and length, flowering time and grain mold score as the most discriminating parameters. The genotypes belonging to cluster 3, in addition of being more productive and more resistant to grain mold and anthracnose, have longer panicles. These genotypes present promising prospects for inclusion in breeding programs focused on advancing sorghum yield and disease resistance in Senegal.展开更多

During this period, a total of 19,126 solar flares were observed regardless the class: 3548 flares in solar cycle 23 (SC23) and 15,668 flares in solar cycle 24 (SC24). Our findings show that the cycle 23 has observed the highest occurrences of M-class and X-class flares, whereas cycle 24 has pointed out a predominance of B-class and C-class flares throughout its different phases. The results indicate that the cycle 23 was magnetically more intense than cycle 24, leading to more powerful solar flares and more frequent geomagnetic storms, capable of generating significant electromagnetic emissions that can affect satellites and GPS signals. The decrease in intense solar flares during cycle 24 compared to cycle 23 reflects an evolution in solar activity patterns over time.展开更多
文摘Nitrate contamination of groundwater is a worldwide problem, particularly in agricultural countries. Nitrate concentrations in the groundwater should therefore be controlled in order to prevent their harmful effects on the health of the population and guarantee its use in rice-growing activities in M’Bahiakro.

The study highlights the complex interaction between magnetic field and temperature, with significant impacts on the transient behaviour.
文摘This work’s aim is to participate in local materials (raw or fiber improved), which can be used in sustainable and accessible buildings to every Senegalese. Thus, same natural materials can be used in the establishment of habitats according to their geotechnical, chemical, mechanical and thermal characteristics.
文摘Production of this crop is experiencing significant challenges, resulting in a decline in seed and fiber quality. Furthermore, these results will assist breeders in incorporating them into their processes to enhance the quality of the varieties they offer to farmers.
文摘The Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) is a disease-resistant, high-productivity bird. These results can help develop strategies for developing and genetically improving this short-cycle resource.
文摘This study examines the socio-economic profile of livestock farmers in coastal Côte d’Ivoire. However, the risk of cross-breeding, which already affects the local Lagoon breed, could be increased by the presence of other species such as the Zebu and Ndamas, or even the Baoulé, in this south-eastern herd.
文摘Introduction: the left atrial appendage, a dormant embryonic vestige, would play a major role in cardiac hemodynamic changes, volume homeostasis and thrombi formation. Taking these variations into account is important in the safe management of hemodynamic conditions and the improvement of the management of recurrent strokes.
文摘Industrial waste management constitutes a major challenge for sustainable development. They can, therefore, be used in road and interior or exterior floor coverings.
文摘Today, agricultural production is threatened by crop pathogens, including plant-parasitic nematodes. These results suggest that Datura metel oil could be a promising alternative to synthetic pesticides for the control of crop pests.
文摘Background: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, remains a global threat despite lifting the health emergency. Conclusion: Scoparia dulcis L. could help manage COVID-19 because it contains biomolecules that can inactivate SARS-CoV-2 Mpro.
文摘Varietal deficiencies of upland rice lead to a low paddy grain yield. These results suggested that any positive increase in the six quantitative traits will increase the paddy grain yield.
文摘Background: Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a common cause of significant morbidity, affecting millions of women worldwide. Identifying the causative species using vaginal fungal cultures can help guide therapy and improve outcomes for these patients.
文摘Hibiscus sabdarrifa flowers are known the world over. The study of the physico-chemical characteristics of Hibiscus sabdarrifa flowers has enabled us to highlight the importance of quality control and the need to prevent any adverse effects on consumer health.
文摘The effect of a storage system on drying time and estimation of drying parameters of cocoa beans using an indirect solar dryer with a sensible heat energy storage system (stones which act as both absorber and heat storage media) is the main subject of this article. The best concordances are obtained with R2 values of 0.9983, 0.9843, 0.9813 and 0.9837 respectively from the models of Hii, Jena and Das, Demir et al. and Alibas.
文摘Nowadays, we are witnessing an era marked by the autonomy of wireless devices and sensor networks without the aid of batteries. The adaptation circuits are obtained by carrying out simulations on the ADS (Advanced Design System) software.
文摘Sorghum is an important cereal crop for smallholder farmers’ food security in many countries in West Africa. These genotypes present promising prospects for inclusion in breeding programs focused on advancing sorghum yield and disease resistance in Senegal.
文摘Elbow dislocations are rare injuries in children due to the resistance of the capsuloligamentous structures. Anterior dislocation is very rare and its combination with an olecranon fracture is unusual. The authors report a case of this lesion in a 7-year-old child managed nonoperatively.
文摘In this study we review the occurrence of different types (A, B, C, M, and X classes) of solar flares during different solar cycle phases from 1996 to 2019 covering the solar cycles 23 and 24. The decrease in intense solar flares during cycle 24 compared to cycle 23 reflects an evolution in solar activity patterns over time.
