An innovative real-time monitoring method for surrounding rock damage based on microseismic time-lapse double-difference tomography is proposed for delayed dynamic damage identification and insufficient detection of adverse geological conditions in deep-buried tunnel construction. The installation techniques for microseismic sensors were optimized by mounting sensors at bolt ends which significantly improves signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)and anti-interference capability compared to conventional borehole placement.Subsequently,a 3D wave velocity evolution model that incorporates construction-induced disturbances was established, enabling the first visualization of spatiotemporal variations in surrounding rock wave velocity. It finds significant wave velocity reduction near the tunnel face, with roof and floor damage zones extending 40–50 m;wave velocities approaching undisturbed levels at 15 m ahead of the working face and on the laterally undisturbed side;pronounced spatial asymmetry in wave velocity distribution—values on the left side exceed those on the right, with a clear stress concentration or transition zone located 10–15 m;and systematically lower velocities behind the face than in front, indicating asymmetric rock damage development. These results provide essential theoretical support and practical guidance for optimizing dynamic construction strategies, enabling real-time adjustment of support parameters, and establishing safety early warning systems in deep-buried tunnel engineering. 展开更多

Geological analysis, despite being a long-term method for identifying adverse geology in tunnels, has significant limitations due to its reliance on empirical analysis. The quantitative aspects of geochemical anomalies associated with adverse geology provide a novel strategy for addressing these limitations. However, statistical methods for identifying geochemical anomalies are insufficient for tunnel engineering. In contrast, data mining techniques such as machine learning have demonstrated greater efficacy when applied to geological data.Herein,a method for identifying adverse geology using machine learning of geochemical anomalies is proposed. The method was identified geochemical anomalies in tunnel that were not identified by statistical methods. We by employing robust factor analysis and self-organizing maps to reduce the dimensionality of geochemical data and extract the anomaly elements combination(AEC).Using the AEC sample data,we trained an isolation forest model to identify the multi-element anomalies, successfully. We analyzed the adverse geological features based the multi-element anomalies. This study, therefore, extends the traditional approach of geological analysis in tunnels and demonstrates that machine learning is an effective tool for intelligent geological analysis.Correspondingly, the research offers new insights regarding the adverse geology and the prevention of hazards during the construction of tunnels and underground engineering projects. 展开更多

This study focuses on addressing ventilation and dust removal challenges during the construction of small-section tunnels using drilling and blasting techniques.Specifically, the research examines the shale gas gathering and transmission trunk line project in the Weiyuan and Luzhou blocks. To gain deeper insights into dust migration patterns, numerical simulations were conducted. The study further analyzed dust migration behavior in small-section tunnels and large steep-sloped shafts, taking into account various factors such as ventilation distance, tunnel slope, and section size. The results indicate that optimal ventilation occurs at distances of 15 and 13 m.Additionally, dust concentration was notably lower when the tunnel slope was 0°,suggesting that a flat slope is more advantageous for construction projects where the outlet wind speed remains constant. Moreover,as the tunnel’s cross-sectional size increases, dust concentration decreases significantly, further underscoring the benefits of larger tunnel sections in mitigating dust accumulation. 展开更多

Dynamic stress adjustment in deep-buried high geostress hard rock tunnels frequently triggers catastrophic failures such as rockbursts and collapses. While a comprehensive understanding of this process is critical for evaluating surrounding rock stability, its dynamic evolution are often overlooked in engineering practice. This study systematically summarizes a novel classification framework for stress adjustment types—stabilizing(two-zoned),shallow failure(three-zoned),and deep failure(four-zoned)—characterized by distinct stress adjustment stages.A dynamic interpretation technology system is developed based on microseismic monitoring, integrating key microseismic parameters(energy index EI,apparent stressσa,microseismic activity S),seismic source parameter space clustering, and microseismic paths. This approach enables precise identification of evolutionary stages, stress adjustment types, and failure precursors, thereby elucidating the intrinsic linkage between geomechanical processes(stress redistribution)and failure risks. The study establishes criteria and procedures for identifying stress adjustment types and their associated failure risks, which were successfully applied in the Grand Canyon Tunnel of the E-han Highway to detect 50 instances of disaster risks. The findings offer invaluable insights into understanding the evolution process of stress adjustment and pinpointing the disaster risks linked to hard rock in comparable high geostress tunnels. 展开更多

Polyurethane foam, when used as a compressible layer in deep soft rock tunnels, offers a feasible solution to reduce the support pressure on the secondary lining. The foam spraying method using sprayed polyurethane material is convenient for engineering applications;however, the compressive behaviour and feasibility of sprayed polyurethane material as a compressible layer remain unclear. To address this gap, this study conducts uniaxial compression tests and scanning electron microscope(SEM)tests to investigate the compressive behaviour of the rigid foams fabricated from a self-developed polyurethane spray material.A peridynamics model for the composite lining with a polyurethane compressible layer is then established. After validating the proposed method by comparison with two tests,a parametric study is carried out to investigate the damage evolution of the composite lining with a polyurethane compressible layer under various combinations of large deformations and compressible layer parameters. The results indicate that the polyurethane compressible layer effectively reduces the radial deformation and damage index of the secondary lining while increasing the damage susceptibility of the primary lining. The thickness of the polyurethane compressible layer significantly influences the prevention effect of large deformation-induced damage to the secondary lining within the density range of 50e100 kg/m^(3).In accordance with the experimental and simulation results,a simple, yet reasonable and convenient approach for determining the key parameters of the polyurethane compressible layer is proposed, along with a classification scheme for the parameters of the polyurethane compressible layer. 展开更多

During strike-slip fault dislocation, multiple fault planes are commonly observed. The resulting permanent ground deformation can lead to profound structural damage to tunnels. However, existing analytical models do not consider multiple fault planes.Instead, they concentrate the entire fault displacement onto a single fault plane for analysis, thereby giving rise to notable errors in the calculated results. To address this issue,a refined nonlinear theoretical model was established to analyze the mechanical responses of the tunnels subjected to multiple strike-slip fault dislocations. The analytical model considers the number of fault planes, nonlinear soil‒tunnel interactions, geometric nonlinearity, and fault zone width, leading to a significant improvement in its range of applicability and calculation accuracy. The results of the analytical model are in agreement, both qualitatively and quantitatively, with the model test and numerical results. Then, based on the proposed theoretical model,a sensitivity analysis of parameters was conducted, focusing on the variables such as the number of fault planes, fault plane distance(d),fault displacement ratio(η),burial depth(C),crossing angle(β),tunnel diameter(D),fault zone width(Wf),and strike-slip fault displacement(Δfs). The results show that the peak shear force(Vmax),bending moment(Mmax),and axial force(Nmax)decrease with increasing d.The Vmax of the tunnel is found at the fault plane with the largest fault displacement.C,D,andΔfs contribute to the increases in Vmax,Mmax, and Nmax.Additionally, increasing the number of fault planes reduces Vmax and Mmax, whereas the variation in Nmax remains minimal. 展开更多

Deep-buried tunnels traversing complex hydrogeological zones with clay-sand-filled structures are highly susceptible to water inrush hazards.High ground temperature, high in-situ stress, and highwater pressure render these events a complex thermohydro-mechanical coupling problem. However, current research on water inrush often insufficiently investigates the multi-field coupled instability mechanisms within highly permeable filling media and frequently neglects the influence of temperature. This study aims to investigate the evolutionary mechanism of seepage instability in filling structures that trigger water inrush hazards under the complex conditions of deep-buried tunnels.Laboratory tests were conducted using a large-scale triaxial thermo-hydro-mechanical system, and a DEM-CFD coupled model was established to numerically simulate the seepage process. The influences of temperature, particle size distribution, and confining pressure were analyzed on the seepage characteristics of the filling media.By examining the variations in water inflow rate, discharged clay-sand particle mass, porosity and permeability,we analyzed the entire process of seepage behavior and instability evolution under the thermohydro-mechanical coupling effect. The results show that:(1)Temperature significantly affects water inflow, discharged particle mass, porosity, and permeability.Higher temperatures remarkably increase porosity and permeability, with the maximum permeability coefficient of filling media at 90℃being 1.6 times that at 45℃.(2)The Talbol power index exhibits a positive correlation with water inflow rate and discharged particle mass, while confining pressure is negatively correlated with water inflow rate.(3)For filling materials dominated by clay-sand particles or with favorable gradation, the seepage instability process exhibits distinct phase characteristics, with different stages reflected in changes in water inflow, porosity, and permeability. The experimental results are consistent with the numerical simulation results.(4)In high ground temperature environments, temperature enhances convective heat transfer and energy exchange between water and filling media, thereby accelerating the process of water inrush caused by seepage instability. The findings provide scientific support for risk assessment, early warning, and prevention of water inrush hazards in deep-buried tunnels crossing clay-sand-filled structures. 展开更多

The construction of bifurcated tunnels is essential to advancing urban infrastructure systems,as they conserve land, reduce carbon emissions, and optimize traffic. However, the bifurcation structure of the parallel confluence section of such tunnels poses significant challenges in the design and operation of the tunnel ventilation system,in terms of both the internal and external environment. In this work, the flow and loss characteristics of parallel confluence sections are studied with numerical simulations and model experiments. The influences of the confluence ratio q and the confluence angle O on the flow characteristics and loss mechanisms of the parallel confluence section are revealed theoretically. The results indicate that when q is small, the high-velocity airflow from the mainline entrains the low-speed airflow from the ramp, leading to flow separation at the upper connection between the parallel section and the gradual transition section;when q is large, the high-velocity airflow from the ramp entrains the low-speed airflow from the mainline, resulting in flow separation on the side of the confluence section adjacent to the mainline.Additionally, the mismatch between the airflow ratio Q and cross-sectional area ratio of the mainline tunnel and the ramp prior to confluence enhances the jet entrainment effect, increases the curvature of the streamline, expands the range of the flow separation area, and generates higher confluence loss coefficients|K_(13)|and|K_(23)|of the mainline and the ramp. For small q,|K_(13)|,and|K_(23)|,remain relatively constant with respect toθ,whereas for large q,both|K_(13)|and|K_(23)|decrease asθincreases. Finally,a semi-empirical formula is proposed to predict the loss coefficients for parallel bifurcated tunnels with confluence angles ranging from 5°to 15°.This study provides insights into the aerodynamic behaviour and loss mechanisms in bifurcated tunnels, offering guidelines for enhancing the efficiency of tunnel ventilation systems in tunnel-like underground infrastructure. 展开更多

Engineering shallow,large-span rock tunnels challenges deformation control and escalates construction costs. This study investigates the excavation compensation method(ECM)and its associated technologies to address these issues.Utilizing five key technologies, the ECM effectively modulates radial stress post-excavation,redistributes stress in the surrounding rock, and eliminates tensile stress at the excavation face.Pre-tensioning measures further enhance the rock’s residual strength, establishing a new stability equilibrium.Field tests corroborate the method’s effectiveness, demonstrating a crown settlement reduction of 3–8 mm,a nearly 50%decrease compared to conventional construction approaches.Additionally, material consumption and construction duration were reduced by approximately 30%–35%and 1.75 months per 100 m,respectively. Thus, the ECM represents a significant innovation in enhancing the stability and construction efficiency of large-span rock tunnels, marking a novel contribution to the engineering field. 展开更多

This paper presents a study of the isolation performance of trenches on train-induced ground-bore vibration from underground tunnels.A series of model tests was conducted to perform the study. Both train loads and sinusoidal sweep loads were applied to the model tunnel invert by a shaker. The response of the soil at the surface of the ground was measured by accelerometers.Three types of isolation trenches,i.e.,an open trench,an expanded Polystyrene(EPS)-filled trench, and a Duxseal-filled trench, were modelled in the experiment. The results showed that the open trench and the EPS-filled trench increased the dynamic response of the surface soil in front of the trench, but the Duxseal-filled trench had little effect on the dynamic response of the soil on the surface in this area.Although all three types of isolation trenches reduced the response of the soil behind the trench, the open trench and the Duxseal-filled trench were clearly more effective. The test results also showed that,as the excitation frequency increased, the vibration isolation trench was more effective in the near field. The effects of the width, depth, and position of an open trench on isolation performance also were examined in the tests. 展开更多

Estimation of support pressure is extremely important to the support system design and the construction safety of tunnels. At present, there are many methods for the estimation of support pressure based on different rock mass classification systems, such as Q system,GSI system and RMR system. However, various rock mass classification systems are based on different tunnel geologic conditions in various regions. Therefore, each rock mass classification system has a certain regionality. In China, the BQ-Inex(BQ system)has been widely used in the field of rock engineering ever since its development.Unfortunately, there is still no estimation method of support pressure with BQ-index as parameters.Based on the field test data from 54 tunnels in China,a new empirical method considering BQ-Inex,tunnel span and rock weight is proposed to estimate the support pressure using multiple nonlinear regression analysis methods. And then the significance and necessity of support pressure estimation method for the safety of tunnel construction in China is explained through the comparison and analysis with the existing internationally widely used support pressure estimation methods of RMR system,Q system and GSI system. Finally, the empirical method of estimating the support pressure based on BQ-index was applied to designing the support system in the China’s high-speed railway tunnel—Zhengwan high-speed railway and the rationality of this method has been verified through the data of field test. 展开更多

Increased attention has been given to ground-borne vibrations induced by railway vehicles and to the effects of these vibrations as they propagate through the ground into nearby buildings.Various studies, mainly based on numerical methods as well as physical modelling, have been carried out to investigate this problem. To study the dynamic response of tunnels and the surrounding soil due to train-induced vibration loads,a centrifuge test was conducted with a small-scale model in 1 g and 50 g stress field environments. An aluminum tube was embedded in sand to model the underground tunnel.A small parallel pre-stressed actuator(PPA)was employed to apply vibration loads on the tunnel invert. The model responses were measured using accelerometers. Both time and frequency domain analyzes were performed. The test results demonstrated that electronic noise had a clear impact on the test results and should be eliminated. It also found that the dynamic response of both the tunnel and soil were affected by the stress field. Therefore,it is important to account for the stress field effects when assessing the ground-borne vibration from tunnels. 展开更多

The control of large deformation problems in layered soft rock tunnels needs to solve urgently. The roof problem is particularly severe among the deformation issues in tunnels. This study first analyzes the asymmetric deformation modes in layered soft rock tunnels with large deformations.Subsequently,we construct a mechanical model under ideal conditions for controlling the roof of layered soft rock tunnels through high preload with the support of NPR anchor cables. The prominent roles of long and short NPR anchor cables in the support system are also analyzed. The results indicate the significance of high preload in controlling the roof of layered soft rock tunnels. The short NPR anchor cables effectively improve the integrity of the stratified soft rock layers, while the long NPR anchor cables effectively mobilize the self-bearing capacity of deep-stable rock layers. Finally, the high-preload support method with NPR anchor cables is validated to have a good effect on controlling large deformations in layered soft rock tunnels through field monitoring data. 展开更多

Large squeezing deformation of layered soft rock tunnel under high geo-stress has a significant time-dependent deformation behavior. In this paper,we studied the deformation mechanism during the construction period of deep-buried softrock tunnel by means of a combination of field observations and a numerical method.First,a new classification criterion for large deformations based on the power exponent variation law between the deformation and the strength-stress ratio is proposed. Then, the initial damage tensor reflecting the bedding plane(joint)distribution and an equivalent damage evolution equation derived from the viscoplastic strain are introduced based on the geometric research method,i.e.,a new rheological damage model(RDL model)of layered soft rock is established consisting of elastic, viscous, viscoelastic, viscoplastic and plastic elements.A field test was conducted on the Maoxian tunnel in Sichuan province, southwestern China, which is in broken phyllite(layered soft rock)under high geo-stress.The tunnel has experienced large deformation due to serious squeezing pressure, thus we adopted double primary support method to overcome the supporting structure failure problems. The rheological parameters of phyllite in the Maoxian tunnel were recognized by using SA-PSO optimization, and the RDL model does a good job in describing the time-dependent deformation behavior of a layered soft-rock tunnel under high geo-stress.Thus,the RDL model was used to investigate the supporting effect and bearing mechanism of the double primary support method.Compared with the single primary support method, the surrounding rock pressure, secondary lining force, surrounding rock deformation, and the depth of the damage to the rock mass was reduced by 40%-60%after the double primary support method was used. 展开更多

Currently, the water inrush hazards during tunnel construction, the water leakage during tunnel operation, and the accompanying disturbances to the ecological environment have become the main problems that affect the structural safety of tunnels in water-rich regions. In this paper,a tunnel seepage model testing system was used to conduct experiments of the grouting circle and primary support with different permeability coefficients. The influences of the supporting structures on the water inflow laws and the distribution of the water pressure in the tunnel were analyzed. With the decrease in the permeability coefficient of the grouting circle or the primary support, the inflow rate of water into the tunnel showed a non-linear decreasing trend. In comparison, the water inflow reduction effect of grouting circle was much better than that of primary support. With the increase of the permeability coefficient of the grouting ring, the water pressure behind the primary lining increases gradually, while the water pressure behind the grouting ring decreases. Thus, the grouting of surrounding rock during the construction of water-rich tunnel can effectively weaken the hydraulic connection, reduce the influence range of seepage, and significantly reduce the decline of groundwater.Meanwhile, the seepage tests at different hydrostatic heads and hydrodynamic heads during tunnel operation period were also conducted. As the hydrostatic head decreased, the water pressure at each characteristic point decreased approximately linearly, and the water inflow rate also had a gradual downward trend.Under the action of hydrodynamic head, the water pressure had an obvious lagging effect, which was not conducive to the stability of the supporting structures, and it could be mitigated by actively regulating the drainage rate.Compared with the hydrostatic head, the hydrodynamic head could change the real-time rate of water inflow to the tunnel and broke the dynamic balance between the water pressure and water inflow rate, thereby affecting the stress state on the supporting structures. 展开更多

The tunnel subjected to strike-slip fault dislocation exhibits severe and catastrophic damage. The existing analysis models frequently assume uniform fault displacement and fixed fault plane position. In contrast,post-earthquake observations indicate that the displacement near the fault zone is typically nonuniform, and the fault plane position is uncertain. In this study,we first established a series of improved governing equations to analyze the mechanical response of tunnels under strike-slip fault dislocation. The proposed methodology incorporated key factors such as nonuniform fault displacement and uncertain fault plane position into the governing equations, thereby significantly enhancing the applicability range and accuracy of the model. In contrast to previous analytical models, the maximum computational error has decreased from 57.1%to 1.1%.Subsequently,we conducted a rigorous validation of the proposed methodology by undertaking a comparative analysis with a 3D finite element numerical model, and the results from both approaches exhibited a high degree of qualitative and quantitative agreement with a maximum error of 9.9%.Finally,the proposed methodology was utilized to perform a parametric analysis to explore the effects of various parameters, such as fault displacement, fault zone width, fault zone strength, the ratio of maximum fault displacement of the hanging wall to the footwall, and fault plane position,on the response of tunnels subjected to strike-slip fault dislocation. The findings indicate a progressive increase in the peak internal forces of the tunnel with the rise in fault displacement and fault zone strength.Conversely,an augmentation in fault zone width is found to contribute to a decrease in the peak internal forces. For example, for a fault zone width of 10 m,the peak values of bending moment, shear force, and axial force are approximately 46.9%,102.4%,and 28.7% higher, respectively, compared to those observed for a fault zone width of 50 m.Furthermore, the position of the peak internal forces is influenced by variations in the ratio of maximum fault displacement of the hanging wall to footwall and the fault plane location, while the peak values of shear force and axial force always align with the fault plane. The maximum peak internal forces are observed when the footwall exclusively bears the entirety of the fault displacement, corresponding to a ratio of 0:1.The peak values of bending moment, shear force, and axial force for the ratio of 0:1 amount to approximately 123.8%,148.6%,and 111.1% of those for the ratio of 0.5:0.5,respectively. 展开更多

Underground geotechnical engineering encounters persistent challenges in ensuring the stability and safety of surrounding rock structures, particularly within rocky tunnels. Rock reinforcement techniques, including the use of steel mesh, are critical to achieving this goal. However, there exists a knowledge gap regarding the comprehensive understanding of the mechanical behavior and failure mechanisms exhibited by steel mesh under diverse loading conditions. This study thoroughly explored the steel mesh's performance throughout the entire loading-failure process, innovating with detailed analysis and modeling techniques. By integrating advanced numerical modeling with laboratory experiments, the study examines the influence of varying reinforcement levels and geometric parameters on the steel mesh strength and deformation characteristics. Sensitivity analysis, employing gray correlation theory, identifies the key factors affecting the mesh performance, while a BP (Backpropagation) neural network model predicts maximum vertical deformation with high accuracy. The findings underscore the critical role of steel diameter and mesh spacing in optimizing peak load capacity, displacement, and energy absorption, offering practical guidelines for design improvements. The use of a Bayesian Regularization (BR) algorithm further enhances the predictive accuracy compared to traditional methods. This research provides new insights into optimizing steel mesh design for underground applications, offering an innovative approach to enhancing structural safety in geotechnical projects. 展开更多
