Systematic vitamin D supplementation has been implemented in most Western countries, which has drastically reduced the prevalence of rickets. In Senegal, a country with enough sunshine, no large-scale data exists on vitamin D deficiency in children. In addition, there are no guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Social Action (MoHSA) on vitamin D supplementation. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in children aged 6 to 59 months and to analyze the factors associated with it at the Institute of Social Pediatrics in Pikine-Guédiawaye, a suburb of Dakar. Patients and Methods: This was a prospective, descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study over a 3-month period (from January to March 2024) at the Institute of Social Pediatric (IPS) of Pikine-Guédiawaye. The study population consisted of all children aged 6 to 59 months free from any acute or chronic pathology, whose parents had agreed to answer the questionnaires after having consented and signed the consent and children who had had a sample taken for vitamin D dosage. Results: We included 102 children, 35 of whom had vitamin D deficiency, i.e. a prevalence of 34.31% with a slight male predominance (sex ratio 1.05). Infants aged 13 - 24 months were more affected (41.67%), but the difference was not statistically significant (p-value = 0.385). Patients with acute malnutrition had a significantly higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (54.17% of cases versus 28.38%) in those without acute malnutrition (p = 0.02). On the other hand, chronic malnutrition, underweight and diversification foods were not significantly associated with vitamin D deficiency (p of 0.60, 0.42 and 0.09 respectively). Conclusion: Vitamin deficiency affects one-third of apparently healthy children under 5 and this deficiency has no significant relationship with diversification foods. This suggests that the observed vitamin D deficiencies are less related to diet than to lack of sun exposure.展开更多

This study aimed to examine the effects of social network characteristics on the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension among older adults. Methods The Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (KSHAP) interviewed 814 〉 60-year-old residents and their spouses from a rural township between December 2011 and March 2012 (response rate: 95%). We evaluated the data from 595 partici- pants. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the effects of network characteristics on hypertension. Results We ob- served strong sex-specific network effects on the prevalence, awareness, and control of hypertension. Among older women, network density was associated with hypertension awareness [odds ratio (OR): 2.63, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03 5.37J and control (OR: 1.72; 95% CI 0.94-3.13). Among older men, large networks were associated with a lower prevalence of hypertension (OR: 0.75; 95% CI: 0.58-0.96). Compared to older women, older men with coarse networks exhibited better hypertension awareness (OR: 0.37; 95% CI: 0.14-0.95) and control (OR: 0.42; 95% CI: 0.19-0.91 ). Network size interacted with density for hypertension control (P = 0.051), with controlled hyperten- sion being associated with large and course networks. Conclusions A large network was associated with a lower risk for hypertension, and a coarse network was associated with hypertension awareness and control among older men. Older women with dense networks were most likely to exhibit hypertension awareness and control.展开更多

Fuller's sociological social epistemology can prompt deep philosophical analyses of the conditions for knowledge that themselves bear on what should count as knowledge. That is, it can be a vital prelude to developing an interdisciplinary investigation into educational issues. This paper looks at the three features that form an integral part of Fuller's social epistemology, which is partly elucidatory and partly critical: naturalistic, normative, and organizational aspects. It goes on to explore whether and to what extent Fuller's criticism of an "always already" thesis in philosophy and his idea of "knowledge management" afford an understanding of human knowledge in particular and human development in general. This paper concludes with an observation that Fuller's social epistemology is flawed in some respects but nonetheless is of relevance to the philosophical study of education.展开更多

Therefore, the govemment-financed welfare program is often looked as a type of a safety net of the state itself by groups of persons having certain features which are detected according to a selection process. The state should grant the ultimate successive safety net to persons in whose cases the previous safety nets would have failed. The beneficiaries are persons selected by different decision-makers who are aware of the actual status of that person. The individual who actually grants the access to the social program does not have all the necessary data. In this context, is the redistribution system effective? The study aims to determine an equilibrium in social assistance and effective methods for providing social benefits. The study has proposed to build a model using the concept of labelling. The quantitative model hereby proposed represents a possibility to design social programs in circumstances of asymmetric information. Therefore, it reveals the sensitivity of the social programs toward social controls or penalties, and it has a stabilizing effect on the economic crisis. The study proposes the use of an expert system (SE) in redistributing incomes in social assistance and concrete ways of state intervention.展开更多

Also, we provide recommendations to address these determinants in the integrated healthcare plan. The social determinants in older adults and its influence in health outcomes have been studied for decades. There is solid evidence for the interrelationship between social factors and the health of individuals and populations;however, these studies are unable to define their complex interrelatedness. Health is quite variable and depends on multiple biological and social factors such as genetics, country of origin, migrant status, etc. On the other hand, health status can affect social factors such as job or education. Addressing social determinants of health in the integrated healthcare plan is important for improving health outcomes and decreasing existing disparities in older adult health. We recommend a person-centered approach in which individualized interventions should be adopted by organizations to improve the health status of older adults at the national and global level. Some of our practical recommendations to better address the social determinants of health in clinical practice are EHR documentation strategies, screening tools, and the development of linkages to the world outside of the clinic and health system, including social services, community activities, collaborative work, and roles for insurance companies.展开更多

The purpose of this community research was to trace the spread and impact of sweetpotato flour in two rural communities in Papua New Guinea. Research strategy was participatory learning and action utilizing participatory mapping. The paper mapping process was documented using a video recorder and field notes. Geographic Information Systems technology was then used to incorporate local spatial knowledge on scale maps to show spread of knowledge. The main finding was the identification of social networks through tracking of sweetpotato knowledge: identifying who used the knowledge and whether there were any modifications, the location of those who used the knowledge and whether this was shared and with whom. Most significant was the enabling factors that strengthened existing and potential future networks. Community leadership styles determine success of development projects. Rural communities are diverse needing participatory multi-layered methodologies that are people oriented for agricultural technologies to be learnt and utilized for improved livelihood.展开更多

文摘Although research has examined the financial sector’s response to COVID-19,the role of the cross-border money transfer industry remains unclear. This study investigates the corporate social responsibility(CSR)actions of 22 cross-border money transfer firms headquartered in Canada, the US,and the UK to determine how they supported stakeholders during the pandemic.Using qualitative data analysis software,we analyze textual data from company websites, press releases, and blogs to assess CSR activities. Our findings show that nine of the 22 cross-border money transfer firms engaged in COVID-related CSR efforts and communicated these actions through their controlled channels. Two out of every three firms that publicized their CSR initiatives during the pandemic were not traded in any stock exchange market. This research has two key implications.First, disclosing CSR initiatives through controlled or uncontrolled channels increases the likelihood of attracting socially conscious customers and investors, which could ultimately lead to higher economic profits.Second, economic profit can create a bandwagon effect, encouraging other money transfer firms to integrate CSR activities into their business models, which may enhance the well-being of the communities they serve and rely upon.
文摘Amidst the unique challenges faced by rural educators is their sense of decent work influenced by levels of social support, career self-efficacy,and marginalization. To investigate these relationships,we surveyed 435 rural school teachers(females=69.32%,mean years teaching experience=13.6,SD=7.7 years). The Structural Equation Modeling results indicated that social support positively predicts teachers’perceptions of decent work.Career self-efficacy mediated the relationship between social support and a higher sense of decent work, while marginalization mediated the relationship such that lower social support predicted lower perceptions of decent work.Career self-efficacy and marginalization also had a sequential mediation relationship:higher social support enhanced career self-efficacy,which in turn reduced marginalization experiences, ultimately improving teachers’perceptions of decent work. These findings align with the predictions of Social Cognitive Career Theory and the Psychology of Working Theory, demonstrating that environmental supports enhance personal psychological resources, reduce marginalization risks, and promote positive work-related outcomes. The study findings highlight the necessity for education departments to improve rural teachers’perceptions of decent work by providing social support to foster positive work experiences for teachers at high risk for marginalization and diminished career self-efficacy.

文摘Background:Weight-related self-stigma(WRSS)is prevalent among individuals with different types of weight status and is associated with a range of negative health outcomes.Social support and coping models explain how individuals may use different coping methods to deal with their mental health needs.Psychological distress(e.g.,depression and stress)could lead to overuse of social media and smartphones. When using social media or smartphones, individuals are likely to be exposed to negative comments regarding weight/shape/size posted on the social media.Consequently, individuals who experience problematic social media use(PSMU)or problematic smartphone use(PSPU)may develop WRSS.Therefore, the present study examined the roles of PSMU and PSPU as mediators in the relationship between psychological distress and WRSS.Methods:Using convenience sampling via an online survey,622 participants with a mean age of 23.70 years(SD=4.33)completed questions assessing sociodemographic variables, psychological distress,PSMU,PSPU,WRSS,and self-reported weight and height. Results:The hierarchical regression models showed that sex(β=0.08,p=0.01),BMI(β=0.39,p<0.001),depression(β=0.21,p=0.001),stress(β=0.18,p=0.01),PSMU(β=0.09,p=0.045),and PSPU(β=0.14,p=0.001)were significant factors for WRSS.Conclusion:The mediation models showed that both PSMU and PSPU were significant mediators in the relationships between depression and stress with WRSS.The present findings provide some evidence for understanding WRSS and has important implications for developing interventions to reduce its negative impact on individuals’health and well-being.
文摘This study analyzes the ways in which social enterprises contribute to society’s goals. In the new era of human development, many social problems cannot be resolved without the participation of social enterprises(SEs).The study on these enterprises is of great significance for theoretical research and practical observation. In a modern market economy,SEs have pro-social market vitality and compatibility with the market economy;their action gives a glimpse into the truth of human development. As can be seen from the socio-economic reality, numerous entrepreneurs nurture a desire to run SEs at a certain stage of their career development. The tendency of some entrepreneurs to run SEs is of great significance for this study.Social enterprises are hybrid enterprises as opposed to for-profit enterprises and SEs must address complex problems through organizational and institutional innovations.State owned enterprises(SOEs)and SEs share many topics of research and have much to learn from each other, and a key question for SOE reform is what makes SOEs efficient quasi-social enterprises. Both SOEs and SEs assume a social mandate, and their fulfillment of social responsibilities is underpinned by their economic efficiency(market competitiveness). The theoretical rationale and institutional mechanism of SEs-not least their innovation practice and formation of rules-stem from the relationship and coordination between economic and social exchanges under market-based conditions.Social enterprises focus on altruistic social exchange but need to be supported by a certain economic exchange to finance their operations. The biggest social problem for China is its failure to balance economic and social exchanges,as well as the method of reward.Research on SEs should promote the understanding of these questions and the quest for their solutions.Social enterprises may inspire more enterprises to pursue pro-social innovation and development.
文摘Objective:This study aimed to examine the developmental trajectories of internalizing behaviors among adolescents and to identify key personal and environmental factors associated with these developmental patterns over time. Methods:Data were collected from 2242 adolescents(49.6%girls,aged 13.9–18.9 years)in South Korea.Latent class growth analysis was used to identify distinct developmental patterns of internalizing behaviors.Multinomial logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations between these developmental patterns and various factors including gender,self-esteem,abuse and neglect experiences, peer relationships, and media use. Results:The analysis revealed three latent classes of internalizing behavior trajectories among adolescents. The first group, the“mid decreasing group”,comprised 54.5%of the sample(1221 students),indicating a moderate level of internalizing behavior that declined over time. The second group, the“high decreasing group”,included 19.1%of the sample(429 students),characterized by initially high levels of internalizing behavior that decreased. The third group, the“low maintained group”,represented 26.4%of the sample(592 students),indicating consistently low levels of internalizing behavior.Factors such as gender,self-esteem,experiences of abuse and neglect, peer relationships(trust and alienation),smartphone dependency, and time spent watching TV/videos were significantly associated with these latent groups. Conclusion:Three distinct developmental patterns of internalizing behaviors were identified among adolescents:mid-decreasing(54.5%),high-decreasing(19.1%),and low-maintained(26.4%).Gender,self-esteem,abuse experiences, and peer relationships were significant predictors of these developmental patterns.
文摘Introduction: Vitamin D plays a key role in phosphocalcic metabolism, in normal functioning of the immune system and in the prevention of certain forms of cancer. This suggests that the observed vitamin D deficiencies are less related to diet than to lack of sun exposure.
文摘The article takes China’s e-commerce as the research object.Starting from the macro level of e-commerce development and taking the rapid rise of“Pinduoduo”as an example,it discusses the“traffic dilemma”and its influence in the traditional e-commerce platform. This discovers the internal mechanism of mobile e-commerce to solve the problem of traffic distribution mechanism by socialization. After that, this study compares the difference between traditional e-commerce and social-commerce systematically, and concludes that traditional e-commerce platform is a necessary process of the development of social-commerce.Socialization is an important trend of the development of traditional e-commerce and social-commerce will promote the realization of C2B model.
文摘The advent of immersive technologies such as the metaverse, extended reality, artificial intelligence, and blockchain offers novel possibilities to transform healthcare services. These innovations coincide with clinicians'aspirations to deliver more comprehensive,patient-centered care tailored to individuals singular needs and preferences.Integration of these emerging tools may confer opportunities for providers to engage patients through new modalities and expand their role. However, responsible implementation necessitates deliberation of ethical implications and steadfast adherence to foundational principles of compassion and interpersonal connection underpinning the profession. While the metaverse introduces new channels for social prescribing, this perspective advocates that its ultimate purpose should be strengthening, not supplanting, human relationships. We propose an ethical framework centered on respect for patients'dignity to guide integration of metaverse platforms into medical practice. This framework serves both to harness their potential benefits and mitigate risks of dehumanization or uncompassionate care. Our analysis maps the developing topology of metaverse-enabled care while upholding moral imperatives for medicine to promote healing relationships and human flourishing.
文摘Background Hypertension is a common chronic disease among older adults, and is associated with medical complications and mor- tality. Older women with dense networks were most likely to exhibit hypertension awareness and control.
文摘Objectives:Academic Evaluation Anxiety is a significant psychological concern among adolescents, with well-documented impacts on academic performance, emotional well-being,and school engagement. In Portugal, recent evidence suggests growing pressure on students to achieve high academic standards, with psychosocial variables such as resilience, perceived support, and school environment playing a crucial role. This study aims to examine the prevalence and psychosocial predictors of Academic Evaluation Anxiety in Portuguese students, and to identify risk and protective factors that inform educational practice. Methods:This cross-sectional,quantitative study analysed data from 3083 students(5th to 12th grade)from the 2024 National Study by the Observatory of Psychological Health and Well-Being.Validated instruments were used, including the Depression,Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 items(DASS-21),the Social and Emotional Skills Scale(SSES),the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children(HBSC)psychological symptoms and well-being indices, the Positive Youth Development(PYD)scale, and the School Environment Scale.Statistical analyses included descriptive measures,one-way ANOVAs,and multivariate linear regression. Results:Academic Evaluation Anxiety was significantly higher among female students(Mean=2.80,SD=0.93)compared to male students(Mean=2.16,SD=1.10),representing approximately 30%higher mean levels of anxiety in girls(F=306.206,p<0.001).Resilience(β=−0.38,p<0.001),self-confidence(β=−0.07,p=0.02),and creativity(β=−0.06,p=0.01)emerged as protective factors, whereas cooperation(β=0.23,p<0.001),teacher relationships(β=0.08,p<0.001),bullying(β=0.07,p<0.001),and school environment(β=0.05,p=0.03)were positively associated with anxiety levels. Conclusions:Academic Evaluation Anxiety is highly prevalent among Portuguese adolescents, with girls reporting significantly higher levels than boys.Resilience,self-confidence,and creativity act as protective factors, while bullying, teacher relationships, cooperation, and negative school climate increase vulnerability. These findings highlight the need for whole-school strategies that strengthen socio-emotional competencies and create psychologically safe learning environments to support both well-being and academic success.

文摘The Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic,Social and Cultural Rights(hereinafter referred to as the“Optional Protocol”),aimed at resolving the challenges surrounding the justiciability of economic, social and cultural rights(ESCR),has been in effect for 11 years. However, this does not signify a definitive resolution of the justiciability dilemma.A review of the Covenant’s negotiation history reveals that states reached a valuable consensus on the justiciability of ESCR in domestic law. However, significant concerns persist, regarding the scope, methods, and standards of admissibility,as well as substantive issues in international the justiciability in international law.Since the adoption of the Optional Protocol, its acceptance and the operation of individual communication procedures have been far from ideal, further exacerbating the justiciability challenges of ESCR in international law.To address these challenges, individual communication procedures concerning ESCR must strike a balance between international oversight and national sovereignty. In terms of procedural issues, the Committee on Economic,Social and Cultural Rights(“the Committee”)should fully leverage admissibility criteria to screen individual communications and ensure procedural safeguards, while adhering to the boundaries of responsibilities within international human rights monitoring mechanisms. In terms of substantive issues, the Committee should further clarify the“reasonableness standard”as the substantive review criterion, avoiding ceiling-like requirements for contract states and minimizing interference with their discretion. This approach would allow the development of a predictable standard of review that combines stability and flexibility.
文摘In this paper, I examine Steve Fuller's "sociological" social epistemology that must be distinguished from its "philosophical" counterpart. This paper concludes with an observation that Fuller's social epistemology is flawed in some respects but nonetheless is of relevance to the philosophical study of education.
文摘The social programs represent the redistribution of revenues collected from taxpayers toward persons considered to be in need according to the public policies. The study proposes the use of an expert system (SE) in redistributing incomes in social assistance and concrete ways of state intervention.
文摘In this paper, we review the social determinants of health in older adults and their complex interrelationship with medical diseases. Some of our practical recommendations to better address the social determinants of health in clinical practice are EHR documentation strategies, screening tools, and the development of linkages to the world outside of the clinic and health system, including social services, community activities, collaborative work, and roles for insurance companies.
文摘Background and Objective:Social media(SoMe)has emerged as a tool in health professions education(HPE),particularly amidst the challenges posed by the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic.Despite the academia’s initial skepticism SoMe has been gaining traction in supporting learning communities, and offering opportunities for innovation in HPE.Our study aims to explore the integration of SoMe in HPE.Four key components were outlined as necessary for a successful integration, and include designing learning experiences, defining educator roles, selecting appropriate platforms, and establishing educational objectives. Methods:This article stemmed from the online Teaching Skills Series module on SoMe in education from the Ophthalmology Foundation, and drew upon evidence supporting learning theories relevant to SoMe integration and models of education.Additionally,we conducted a literature review considering Englishlanguage articles on the application of SoMe in ophthalmology from PubMed over the past decade.Key Content and Findings:Early adopters of SoMe platforms in HPE have leveraged these tools to enhance learning experiences through interaction, dialogue, content sharing, and active learning strategies.By integrating SoMe into educational programs, both online and in-person,educators can overcome time and geographical constraints, fostering more diverse and inclusive learning communities.Careful consideration is,however, necessary to address potential limitations within HPE.Conclusions:This article lays groundwork for expanding SoMe integration in HPE design, emphasizing the supportive scaffold of various learning theories, and the need of furthering robust research on examining its advantages over traditional educational formats. Our literature review underscores an ongoing multifaceted, random application of SoMe platforms in ophthalmology education. We advocate for an effective incorporation of SoMe in HPE education, with the need to comply with good educational practice.

文摘Periodic markets are an important aspect of local economies, providing a platform for farmers(producers),wholesalers, retailers, and consumers to interact face-to-face and exchange goods and services. These markets have been increasing in urban areas in Africa,Asia, and South America because of urbanization. The increase of periodic urban markets(PUMs)in urban areas is observed as an index of modernization, reflecting a response to transition process. However, there are limited studies on how social interactions in PUMs contribute to sustainable livelihoods. This study investigated the types of social interactions occurring in PUMs in Ghana, the benefits of social interactions for participants of PUMs,and how social interactions contribute to sustainable livelihoods. This research interviewed 162 participants, comprising 27 farmers(farmers were regarded as producers in this study),61 retailers,47 wholesalers from 9 selected PUMs across Ghana, and 27 officers from government institutions and non-governmental market associations to obtain their opinions. We analyzed the interview data using the NVivo software. The results showed that there are seven kinds of social interactions in PUMs,including(i)producer-wholesaler relationship,(ii)producer-consumer relationship,(iii)wholesaler-retailer relationship,(iv)retailer-consumer relationship,(v)trader-driver relationship,(vi)trader-institution relationship,and(vii)trader-international buyer relationship. We found that these social interactions in PUMs enhance sustainable livelihoods by supporting human, social, financial, natural, and physical assets of traders(traders refer to producers, wholesalers, and retailers in this study). Therefore,we concluded that the development of policies to improve PUMs could strengthen social interactions, enabling the achievement of sustainable livelihoods in developing countries.
文摘This research drew from social learning and international development literature. Rural communities are diverse needing participatory multi-layered methodologies that are people oriented for agricultural technologies to be learnt and utilized for improved livelihood.
文摘The optional Protocol to the international covenant on economic, Social and cultural Right was adopted in 2008 and entered into force in 2013? During the five years after its entry into force, 23 States have ratified the optional Protocol, and 23 individual communications have been submitted to the committee on economic,Social and cultural Rights? comparing with the acceptance of individual communication procedures under other core international human rights treaties, the record of ratification of the optional Protocol is not satisfactory? in its examination of individual communications, the committee on economic, Social and cultural Rights has made detailed reasoning, extensively referred to its previous general comments, and in case of violations found, suggested both specific and general remedies? in its practice of examining individual communications, the committee on economic, Social and cultural Rights needs to clarify and define the rights under the covenant and their corresponding obligations, while maintaining its nature and role as a supervisory body, without expanding its competence to an unacceptable extent?
