How do ethnic groups with different cultural traditions in a multi-ethnic country exchange, communicate, and integrate? How can we draw upon the historical experiences of China's multi-ethnic cultural exchanges?Do Confucianism,Taoism, and Buddhism belong exclusively to the Central Plains culture?Exploring these questions holds significant practical importance for fostering a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation and promoting the construction of a shared spiritual homeland for the Chinese people. In Chinese history, the religious and cultural exchanges among the Han,Tibetan, and Mongolian ethnic groups—marked by mutual learning, mutual promotion, and joint development—have left behind valuable experiences and formed a model of"Diversified Mutuality and Harmony"in religious and cultural exchanges. These three ethnic groups, centered on Confucianism,Taoism, and Buddhism as their axial beliefs, established a multi-layered mode of communication. The harmonious coexistence of diverse religions not only enriched and developed the main cultural traditions of Confucianism,Taoism, and Buddhism, branching out luxuriantly and innovating interactively, but also infused fresh vitality into the cultures of each ethnic group. This ultimately gave rise to a broad, profound, and enduring Chinese culture by way of unity in diversity. 展开更多

This article reflects on the circulation and transformation of the concept of"local knowledge"in the academic circles in London and Beijing. It aims to shed light on the ways in which a"keyword"became intertwined with the debate between the universalists and particularists in the West and with the rivalry between Chinese culturologists and pan-power social scientists near the end of the 20th century.Key to the transformations of the concept is the re-emergence of an old idea in new forms in the intellectual world and in the varied approaches to particular problematics. The same transformations have continued to take place, even in the efforts of opposing"local knowledge,"for instance,in the author's own endeavors to re-pattern the cosmological thoughts of different cultures,to give world status to"local knowledge,"and to break through the barrier between universality and particularity. 展开更多

Historically,Chinese religions have been the product of continuous exchange with and mutual learning from other religions and civilizations.Religions from other areas of the world, especially Buddhism from India,Christianity from the Mediterranean, and Islam from Arabia have been localized and inculturated by absorbing elements of Chinese culture, achieving new Chinese forms through creative transformation and innovative development while enriching the diversity and enhancing the flourishing of Chinese culture. To continue to support the inculturation of religions in China and to foster dialogue between them and Chinese culture is to build China as a cultural community with diverse religions. It is necessary therefore to consult the representative theories and practices of inter-religious dialogue in contemporary international academic circles—e.g.,scriptural reasoning, comparative theology, and interreligious theology then to develop inculturated forms of world religions through a comprehensive inculturation strategy of recovering, retrieving, restoring, reconfiguring, reconstructing, and renewing.By such means,we can contribute to building up China as a cultural community of religious diversity. 展开更多
