Three hundred students were recruited for this study representing 120 males (40%) and 180 females (60%) with their age ranging from 12 to 20 years from September to November, 2010. Samples of blood were collected and processed using standard laboratory procedures. All the students were screened for the presence of antibodies to HIV-1 and -2 using 2 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) rapid screening kits, based on WHO systems-2 for detecting antibodies to HIV-1 and -2. The diagnosis of HIV infection was further confirmed by Western blot. The results showed that out of the 300 students who were enrolled into the study, 6 (2%) were positive for HIV-1 and -2 antibodies including two males (0.7%) and four females (1.3%). Statistically, there is a significant difference in the distribution of HIV infections by gender (P 0.05). Although its prevalence is low, the presence of HIV-1 and -2 antibodies in Secondary School students of Udenu L.G.A. of Enugu State should be worrisome because it can easily be transmitted to other healthy individuals in the nearest future. Therefore, this calls for a concerted and synergistic effort to nip the spread in the bud so that it cannot spread to other teenagers and the larger community.展开更多

MP at an initial concentration of 1200 mg/L could be totally biodegraded by A. radioresistens USTB-04 as the sole carbon source less than 4 d in the presence of phosphate and urea as phosphorus and nitrogen sources, respectively. Biodegradation of MP was also achieved using cell-free extract of A. radioresistens USTB-04. MP at an initial concentration of 130 mg/L was completely biodegraded in 2 h in the presence of cell-free extract with a protein concentration of 148.0 mg/L, which was increased with the increase of pH from 5.0 to 8.0. Contrary to published reports, no intermediate or final degradation metabolites of MP could be observed. Thus we suggest that the cleavage of C-C bond on the benzene ring other than P-O bond may be the biodegradation pathway of MP by A. radioresistens USTB-04.展开更多

文摘In this paper,we develop an advanced computational framework for the topology optimization of orthotropic materials using meshless methods. The approximation function is established based on the improved moving least squares(IMLS)method, which enhances the efficiency and stability of the numerical solution. The numerical solution formulas are derived using the improved element-free Galerkin(IEFG)method. We introduce the solid isotropic microstructures with penalization(SIMP)model to formulate a mathematical model for topology opti-mization,which effectively penalizes intermediate densities. The optimization problem is defined with the numerical solution formula and volume fraction as constraints. The objective function, which is the minimum value of flexibility,is optimized iteratively using the optimization criterion method to update the design variables efficiently and converge to an optimal solution.Sensitivity analysis is performed using the adjoint method, which provides accurate and efficient gradient information for the optimization algorithm. We validate the proposed framework through a series of numerical examples, including clamped beam, cantilever beam, and simply supported beam made of orthotropic materials. The convergence of the objective function is demonstrated by increasing the number of iterations.Additionally, the stability of the iterative process is analyzed by examining the fluctuation law of the volume fraction.By adjusting the parameters to an appropriate range,we achieve the final optimization results of the IEFG method without the checkerboard phenomenon.Comparative studies between the Element-Free Galerkin(EFG)and IEFG methods reveal that both methods yield consistent optimization results under identical parameter settings. However, the IEFG method significantly reduces computational time, highlighting its efficiency and suitability for orthotropic materials.
文摘The primary objective of this study is to develop an innovative theoretical model to accurately predict the thermophysicalproperties of hybrid nanofluids designed to enhance cooling in solar panel applications. This researchlays the groundwork for our future studies, which will focus on photovoltaic thermal applications. These nanofluidsconsist of water and nanoparticles of alumina(Al_(2)O_(3)),titanium dioxide(TiO_(2)),and copper(Cu),exploringvolumetric concentrations ranging from 0%to 4%for each type of nanoparticle, and up to 10%for total mixtures. The developed model accounts for complex interactions between the nanoparticles and the base fluid,as well assynergistic effects resulting from the coexistence of different nanoparticles.Detailed simulations have shownexceptional agreement with experimental results, reinforcing the credibility of our approach in accurately capturingthe thermophysical behavior of these hybrid nanofluids.Based on these results, our study proposes significantadvancements in the design and optimization of nanofluids for cooling applications in solar panels. These developmentsare crucial for improving the efficiency of solar installations by mitigating overheating effects, providinga solid foundation for practical applications in this rapidly evolving field.

文摘As a natural alkaloid found extensively in cereal crops, gramine not only plays a crucial role in protecting barley and other grasses from various pests, but also reduces palatability for ruminants. Scientists are trying to figure out how gramine gets into cereal plants: is it inherently present or transformed through a special process? The latest study published in Science by Sara Leite Dias and co-authors, provides a detailed explanation. The starting point of the transformation is identified, and the transformation process is confirmed through rigorous experiments.
文摘The buckling behavior of stiffened panels is significantly influenced by material and geometric defects, making it a critical factor in ensuring structural integrity and safety. These panels are widely used in mechanical, aerospace, marine, and civil engineering applications due to their ability to enhance bending stiffness with minimal additional weight.Under high loads or stress concentrations, localized structural failures can initiate global buckling in stiffened panels. This study investigates how such defects affect the critical buckling load, stiffness, and thickness of stiffened panels. Two finite element analyses were conducted:a linear analysis to identify the initial buckling mode and a nonlinear analysis using the Riks algorithm in Abaqus CAE,incorporating localized imperfections. The simulations show that material and geometric defects can reduce buckling resistance depending on their severity.

文摘In this paper,a class of quaternion-valued cellular neural networks(QVCNNS)with time-varying delays are considered.Combining graph theory with the continuation theorem of Mawhin’s coincidence degree theory as well as Lyapunov functional method,we establish new criteria on the existence and exponential stability of periodic solutions for QVCNNS by removing the assumptions for the boundedness on the activation functions and the assumptions that the values of the activation functions are zero at origin.Hence, our results are less conservative and new.
文摘Reliable and efficient communication is essential for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)networks, especially in dynamic and resource-constrained environments such as disaster management, surveillance, and environmental monitoring.Frequent topology changes, high mobility, and limited energy availability pose significant challenges to maintaining stable and high-performance routing.Traditional routing protocols, such as Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector(AODV),Load-Balanced Optimized Predictive Ad hoc Routing(LB-OPAR),and Destination-Sequenced Distance Vector(DSDV),often experience performance degradation under such conditions. To address these limitations, this study evaluates the effectiveness of Dynamic Adaptive Routing(DAR),a protocol designed to adapt routing decisions in real time based on network dynamics and resource constraints. The research utilizes the Network Simulator 3(NS-3)platform to conduct controlled simulations, measuring key performance indicators such as latency,Packet Delivery Ratio(PDR),energy consumption, and throughput.Comparative analysis reveals that DAR consistently outperforms conventional protocols, achieving a 20%-30% reduction in latency,a 25% decrease in energy consumption, and marked improvements in throughput and PDR.These results highlight DAR’s ability to maintain high communication reliability while optimizing resource usage in challenging operational scenarios.By providing empirical evidence of DAR’s advantages in highly dynamic UAV network environments, this study contributes to advancing adaptive routing strategies. The findings not only validate DAR’s robustness and scalability but also lay the groundwork for integrating artificial intelligence-driven decision-making and real-world UAV deployment.Future work will explore cross-layer optimization,multi-UAV coordination, and experimental validation in field trials, aiming to further enhance communication resilience and energy efficiency in next-generation aerial networks.

文摘The transportation and logistics sectors are major contributors to Greenhouse Gase(GHG)emissions.Carbon dioxide(CO_(2))from Light-Duty Vehicles(LDVs)is posing serious risks to air quality and public health.Understanding the extent of LDVs’impact on climate change and human well-being is crucial for informed decisionmaking and effective mitigation strategies. This study investigates the predictability of CO_(2)emissions from LDVs using a comprehensive dataset that includes vehicles from various manufacturers, their CO_(2)emission levels, and key influencing factors.Specifically, sixMachine Learning(ML)algorithms, ranging fromsimple linearmodels to complex non-linear models, were applied under identical conditions to ensure a fair comparison and their performance metrics were calculated. The obtained results showed a significant influence of variables such as engine size on CO_(2)emissions.Although the six algorithms have provided accurate forecasts, the Linear Regression(LR)model was found to be sufficient, achieving a Mean Absolute Percentage Error(MAPE)below 0.90%and a Coefficient of Determination(R2)exceeding 99.7%.These findings may contribute to a deeper understanding of LDVs’role in CO_(2)emissions and offer actionable insights for reducing their environmental impact. In fact, vehicle manufacturers can leverage these insights to target key emission-related factors, while policymakers and stakeholders in logistics and transportation can use the models to estimate the CO_(2)emissions of new vehicles before their market deployment or to project future emissions from current and expected LDV fleets.

文摘Floating photovoltaic(FPV)technology is emerging as a highly promising approach to accelerate decarbonization of the global economy, due to its higher power generation efficiency and lower land occupation. With the rapid development of FPV technology, the mechanical performance degradation of key components caused by the harsh marine environment has become a pressing issue,as it significantly contributes to failure behavior observed in FPV systems.A comprehensive compilation of the mechanical performance of key components in FPV systems is also currently unavailable. Here, the mechanical behavior of each structural component in FPV systems under harsh marine environments is systematically reviewed. It further emphasizes the synergistic effects of mechanical performance degradation among different components on the overall system. The drop-off rate(v)of normalized elongation at break(EAB)of polymer under the synergistic effect of various environmental factors increases from 7.5×10^(−4)h^(−1)to 21.8×10^(−4)h^(−1)compared with the single environmental stress. Moreover, the development of novel materials and innovative mechanical structures applied in FPV systems to enhance mechanical performance is discussed. The novel flexible PV modules applied in FPV systems minimize the loads acting on the mooring lines by 80%and increase power generation by 5%.Notably,this paper provides a theoretical foundation for developing standards of FPV systems, especially the establishment of standards related to the synergistic effects of the mechanical performance degradation of different key components on FPV systems.
文摘Activated carbon (AC) was modified by tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) for selectively extracting scandium from red mud and characterized by BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area. The modified AC had a preferential adsorption to scandium. The influences of adsorbent dos- age, adsorption temperature, and time on adsorption capacity and selectivity to scandium were examined. An optimum adsorbent dosage (-6.25 g/L), adsorption temperature (308 K), and adsorption time (40 min) were figured out. A pseudo-second-order kinetics model was employed for describing the adsorption process of scandium.

文摘Vitamin A ester was synthesized in organic solvents with immobilized lipase from Candida sp. The types of lipases, influences of solvent, the molar ratio of substrates, the reaction temperature and the water activity in the reaction were studied in detail in order to obtain the optimum conditions for Vitamin A palmitate synthesis. In a system of hexane, 100mg immobilized Candida sp. lipase was used in the presence of 1.2mmol vitamin A acetate and 3.6mmol palmitic acid. The yield of vitamin A palmitate reached 81% in 12h at 25℃. The immobilized Candida sp. lipase was prepared by adsorbing Cand/da sp. fermentation broth on pretreated textile and could be reused for at least six batches.

文摘Biodegradation of methyl parathion (MP), a widely used organophosphorus pesticide, was investigated using a newly isolated bacterium strain Acinetobacter radioresistens USTB-04. Thus we suggest that the cleavage of C-C bond on the benzene ring other than P-O bond may be the biodegradation pathway of MP by A. radioresistens USTB-04.
