Applications of Advanced Optimized Neuro Fuzzy Models for Enhancing Daily Suspended Sediment Load Prediction

Accurate daily suspended sediment load(SSL)prediction is essential for sustainable water resource management,sediment control,and environmental planning.However,SSL prediction is highly complex due to its nonlinear and dynamic nature,making traditional empirical models inadequate.This study proposes a novel hybrid approach,integrating the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System(ANFIS)with the Gradient-Based Optimizer(GBO),to enhance SSL forecasting accuracy.The research compares the performance of ANFIS-GBO with three alternative models:standard ANFIS,ANFIS with Particle Swarm Optimization(ANFIS-PSO),and ANFIS with Grey Wolf Optimization(ANFIS-GWO).Historical SSL and streamflow data from the Bailong River Basin,China,are used to train and validate the models.The input selection process is optimized using the Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines(MARS)method.Model performance is evaluated using statistical metrics such as Root Mean Square Error(RMSE),Mean Absolute Error(MAE),Mean Absolute Percentage Error(MAPE),Nash Sutcliffe Efficiency(NSE),and Determination Coefficient(R^(2)).Additionally,visual assessments,including scatter plots,Taylor diagrams,and violin plots,provide further insights into model reliability.The results indicate that including historical SSL data improves predictive accuracy,with ANFIS-GBO outperforming the other models.ANFIS-GBO achieves the lowest RMSE and MAE and the highest NSE and R^(2),demonstrating its superior learning ability and adaptability.The findings highlight the effectiveness of nature-inspired optimization algorithms in enhancing sediment load forecasting and contribute to the advancement of AI-based hydrological modeling.Future research should explore the integration of additional environmental and climatic variables to enhance predictive capabilities further. 展开更多

Sensitivity of short-range order prediction to machine learning potential formalisms:A case study on NbMoTaW high-entropy alloy

Chemical short-range order(SRO),a phenomenon at the atomic scale resulting from inhomogeneities in the local chemical environment,is usually studied using machine learning force field-based molecular dynamics simulations due to the limitations of experimental methods.To promote the reliable application of machine potentials in high-entropy alloy simulations,first,this work uses NEP models trained on two different datasets to predict the SRO coefficients of NbMoTaW.The results show that within the same machine learning framework,there are significant differences in the prediction of SRO coefficients for the Nb-Nb atomic pair.Subsequently,this work predicts the SRO coefficients of NbMoTaW using the NEP model and the SNAP model,both of which are trained on the same dataset.The results reveal significant discrepancies in SRO predictions for like-element pairs(e.g.,Nb-Nb and W-W)between the two potentials,despite the identical training data.The findings of this study indicate that discrepancies in the prediction results of SRO coefficients can arise from either the same machine learning framework trained on different datasets or different learning frameworks trained on the same dataset.This reflects possible incompleteness in the current training set's coverage of local chemical environments at the atomic scale.Future research should establish unified evaluation standards to assess the capability of training sets to accurately describe complex atomic-scale behaviors such as SRO. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to identify and synthesize functional groups for the efficient adsorption of volatile organic compounds(VOCs)through a combination of theoretical calculations,molecular design,and experimental validation.The density functional theory(DFT)calculation,focusing on the P-containing functional groups,showed that methanol adsorption was dominated by the electrostatic interaction between the carbon surface and methanol,while toluene was mainly trapped through π-π dispersive interaction between toluene molecule and functional group structure.The experimental results showed the phosphorus-doped carbon materials(PCAC)prepared by directly activating potassium phytate had a phosphorus content of up to 4.5%(atom),mainly in the form of C-O-P(O)(OH)_(2).The material exhibited a high specific area(987.6m^(2)·g^(-1))and a large adsorption capacity for methanol(440.0 mg·g^(-1))and toluene(350.1 mg·g^(-1)).These properties were superior to those of the specific commercial activated carbon(CAC)sample used for comparison in this study.The adsorption efficiencies per unit specific surface area of PCAC were 0.45 mg·g^(-1) m^(-2) for methanol and 0.35 mg·g^(-1)·m^(-2) for toluene.This study provided a novel theoretical and experimental framework for the molecular design of polarized elements to enhance the adsorption of polar gases,offering significant advancements over existing commercial solutions. 展开更多

Improving the OER activity of noble metal-based materials is of profound importance to minimize the usage of noble metals and lower the cost.Here,we report considerable improvement on the catalytic activity of RuO_(2) particles for OER in both alkali and acid environments.The RuO_(2) nanoparticles were treated with a method of pulse laser ablation.Numerous Ru and RuO_(2) clusters were generated at the surface of RuO_(2) nanoparticles after the laser ablation,forming a lychee-shaped morphology.The larger pulse energy RuO_(2) nanoparticles are treated with,the better the OER activity can be.DFT calculations shows that the surface tension induced by the lychee-shaped morphology benefits the OER performance.Our best sample gives an overpotential of 172 mV(at 10 mA cm^(-2))and a Tafel slope of 53.5 mV dec^(-1) in KOH,while an overpotential of 219 mV and a Tafel slope of 44.9 mV dec^(-1) in H_(2)SO_(4),which are of topclass results.This work may inspire a new way to develop high-performance electrocatalysts for OER. 展开更多

The present work focused on the application of innovative damping technologies in order to improve railway vehicle performances in terms of dynamic stability and comfort. As a benchmark case-study, the secondary sus- pension stage was selected and different control techniques were investigated, such as skyhook, dynamic compensation, and sliding mode control. The final aim was to investigate which control schemes are suitable for optimal exploitation of the non-linear behavior of the actuators. The performance improvement achieved by adoption of the semi-active dampers on a standard high-speed train was evaluated in terms of passenger comfort. Different control strategies have been investigated by comparing a simple SISO (single input single output) regulator based on the skyhook damper ap- proach with a centralized regulator. The centralized regulator allows for the estimation of a near optimal set of control forces that minimize car-body accelerations with respect to constraints imposed by limited performance of semi-active actuators. Simulation results show that best results is obtained using a mixed approach that considers the simultaneous applications of model based and feedback compensation control terms. 展开更多

The underlying causes of biodiversity disparities among geographic regions have long been a fundamental theme in ecology and evolution.However,the patterns of phylogenetic diversity(PD) and phylogenetic beta diversity(PBD) of congeners that are disjunctly distributed between eastern Asia-eastern North America(EA-ENA disjuncts) and their associated factors remain unknown.Here we investigated the standardized effect size of PD(SES-PD),PBD,and potentially associated factors in 11natural mixed forest sites(five in EA and six in ENA) where abundant EA-ENA disjuncts occur.We found that the disjuncts in ENA possessed higher SES-PD than those in EA at the continental scale(1.96vs-1.12),even though the number of disjunct species in ENA is much lower than in EA(128 vs 263).SESPD of the EA-ENA disjuncts tended to decrease with increasing latitude in 11 sites.The latitudinal diversity gradient of SES-PD was stronger in EA sites than in ENA sites.Based on the unweighted unique fraction metric(UniFrac) distance and the phylogenetic community dissimilarity,PBD showed that the two northern sites in EA were more similar to the six-site ENA group than to the remaining southern EA sites.Based on the standardized effect size of mean pairwise distances(SES-MPD),nine of eleven studied sites showed a neutral community structure(-1.96 ≤SES-MPD ≤1.96).Both Pearson’s r and structural equation modeling suggested that SES-PD of the EA-ENA disjuncts was mostly associated with mean divergence time.Moreover,SES-PD of the EA-ENA disjuncts was positively correlated with temperaturerelated climatic factors,although negatively correlated with mean diversification rate and community structure.By applying approaches from phylogenetics and community ecology,our work sheds light on historical patterns of the EA-ENA disjunction and paves the way for further research. 展开更多

The safe and reliable operation of lithium-ion batteries necessitates the accurate prediction of remaining useful life(RUL).However,this task is challenging due to the diverse ageing mechanisms,various operating conditions,and limited measured signals.Although data-driven methods are perceived as a promising solution,they ignore intrinsic battery physics,leading to compromised accuracy,low efficiency,and low interpretability.In response,this study integrates domain knowledge into deep learning to enhance the RUL prediction performance.We demonstrate accurate RUL prediction using only a single charging curve.First,a generalisable physics-based model is developed to extract ageing-correlated parameters that can describe and explain battery degradation from battery charging data.The parameters inform a deep neural network(DNN)to predict RUL with high accuracy and efficiency.The trained model is validated under 3 types of batteries working under 7 conditions,considering fully charged and partially charged cases.Using data from one cycle only,the proposed method achieves a root mean squared error(RMSE)of 11.42 cycles and a mean absolute relative error(MARE)of 3.19%on average,which are over45%and 44%lower compared to the two state-of-the-art data-driven methods,respectively.Besides its accuracy,the proposed method also outperforms existing methods in terms of efficiency,input burden,and robustness.The inherent relationship between the model parameters and the battery degradation mechanism is further revealed,substantiating the intrinsic superiority of the proposed method. 展开更多

The synthesis of evolutionary biology and community ecology aims to understand how genetic variation within one species can shape community properties and how the ecological properties of a community can drive the evolution of a species.A rarely explored aspect is whether the interaction of genetic variation and community properties depends on the species'ecological role.Here we investigated the interactions among environmental factors,species diversity,and the within-species genetic diversity of species with different ecological roles.Using high-throughput DNA sequencing,we genotyped a canopydominant tree species,Parashorea chinensis,and an understory-abundant species,Pittosporopsis kerrii,from fifteen plots in Xishuangbanna tropical seasonal rainforest and estimated their adaptive,neutral and total genetic diversity;we also surveyed species diversity and assayed key soil nutrients.Structural equation modelling revealed that soil nitrogen availability created an opposing effect in species diversity and adaptive genetic diversity of the canopy-dominant Pa.chinensis.The increased adaptive genetic diversity of Pa.chinensis led to greater species diversity by promoting co-existence.Increased species diversity reduced the adaptive genetic diversity of the dominant understory species,Pi.kerrii,which was promoted by the adaptive genetic diversity of the canopy-dominant Pa.chinensis.However,such relationships were absent when neutral genetic diversity or total genetic diversity were used in the model.Our results demonstrated the important ecological interaction between adaptive genetic diversity and species diversity,but the pattern of the interaction depends on the identity of the species.Our results highlight the significant ecological role of dominant species in competitive interactions and regulation of community structure. 展开更多

We reach sufficient evidence that the sEMG signal contains a large chaotic component. We have estimated the correlation dimension (fractal measure), the largest Lyapunov exponent, the LZ complexity and the %Rec and %Det of the RQA demonstrating that such indexes are able to detect the presence of repetitive hidden patterns in sEMG which, in turn, senses the level of MU synchronization within the muscle. The results give also an interesting methodological indication in the sense that it evidences the manner in which nonlinear methods and RQA must be arranged and applied in clinical routine in order to obtain results of clinical interest. We have studied the muscular dystrophy and evidence that the continuous regime of chaotic transitions that we have in muscular mechanisms may benefit in this pathology by the use of the NPT treatment that we have considered in detail in our previous publications. 展开更多

Quantum interference effect constitutes one of this theory’s main tenets and has been repeatedly demonstrated experimentally, in the last decade, in adult subjects. In the present paper, we aim to demonstrate, for the first time, the existence of thequantum interference effect on children during an experiment involving an integration of cognition and emotion. Our positive results consolidate the presuppositions of quantum cognition, enlarging its field of application to children’s mental apparatus and evidence the important question to consider the quantum model in the current investigated question of the interaction of cognition and emotion in children at neurological and psychological levels. 展开更多

Integrating value-chain approach with participatory multicriteria analysis for sustainable planning of a niche crop in Indian Himalayas

The value-chain approach(VCA)was used for exploring how a niche crop,namely large cardamom(Amomum subulatum Roxb.),can be developed sustainably to increase incomes and enhance rural livelihoods in the mountains.Large cardamom is a high-value,agro-climatically suitable,and non-perishable spice crop grown in the Himalayan region.Originating in Sikkim,the crop is important to the local economy and is sold in both domestic and international markets;however,its production in India has been declining significantly in recent years.Using VCA and participatory methods of data collection the study helped elicit value chain actors’perspectives on various reasons for the decline as well as potential strategies to improve the cardamom value chain.The results present the multiple environmental and climatic(e.g.water stress),social(e.g.women participation)and institutional(e.g.lack of trust between actors)challenges and corresponding upgrading strategies.Through participatory multi-criteria analysis(MCA),the strategies were prioritized based on the overall preferences of multiple stakeholders.The analysis considered eight criteria and 25 options,or strategies,and found that that marketability and profitability were the most important criteria,and increasing cardamom production,the most important optiontrait.Stakeholder discussions along with sensitivity analysis also showed how these options could be implemented and revealed how criteria preferences can change with expert inputs.This combination of VCA and MCA,because it supports participatory decision-making and balances multiple dimensions of sustainable development,can be effectively deployed in planning for agricultural development in the mountains. 展开更多

Objective:To generate an understanding of the lived experiences of a shared central phenomenon of RN-to-BSN graduates and determine their perceptions of the value of their BSN degree.Methods:The data collection procedure was open-ended,semi-structured,which was consisted of one-on-one interviews with 12 nurses who are licensed in Massachusetts and who are graduates of RN-to-BSN programs.Results:The findings identified seven major emerging themes,a)job requirement,b)promotion,c)professional growth,d)personal growth,e)family obligations,f)time and energy,and h)compensation.The themes were incomparable through all emerging themes.Conclusions:The research data analysis supports the need for the non-BSN RNs to continue their education to the BSN level should be central for nurse executives in hiring positions to help non-BSN staff RNs interested in these positions to meet the BSN requirement for applying for jobs that they may qualify for,but do not possess the BSN degree.There was a definite connection between job requirement and promotion from all the research study participants. 展开更多

An impact assessment of the COVID‑19 pandemic on Japanese and US hotel stocks

This study proposes two new regime-switching volatility models to empirically analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hotel stock prices in Japan compared with the US,taking into account the role of stock markets.The first model is a direct impact model of COVID-19 on hotel stock prices;the analysis finds that infection speed negatively affects Japanese hotel stock prices and shows that the regime continues to switch to high volatility in prices due to COVID-19 until September 2021,unlike US stock prices.The second model is a hybrid model with COVID-19 and stock market impacts on the hotel stock prices,which can remove the market impacts on regime-switching volatility;this analysis demonstrates that COVID-19 negatively affects hotel stock prices regardless of whether they are in Japan or the US.We also observe a transition to a high-volatility regime in hotel stock prices due to COVID-19 until around summer 2021 in both Japan and the US.These results suggest that COVID-19 is likely to affect hotel stock prices in general,except for the influence of the stock market.Considering the market influence,COVID-19 directly and/or indirectly affects Japanese hotel stocks through the Japanese stock market,and US hotel stocks have limited impacts from COVID-19 owing to the offset between the influence on hotel stocks and no effect on the stock market.Based on the results,investors and portfolio managers should be aware that the impact of COVID-19 on hotel stock returns depends on the balance between the direct and indirect effects,and varies from country to country and region to region. 展开更多

What has really happened in Europe since 2014?Why in 2018 are so many migrants still making their way towards Europe?For the first time since the Second World War,an important number of individuals have entered into European soil.The idea for this article goes back to October 2015 when the prefet from the town where I live went in search of asylum seekers.This is what sparked off my inquiry amongst about 50 exiles housed in the annex of the Montmorency(95)hospital in July 2015.But against popular belief,migrants are not accepted fairly into countries,and the geographical distribution of Syrians in Turkey,Lebanon,Jordan,and Europe is contrary to what Kant had defended as a“right to visit”.Although the majority of researchers suggest welcoming migrants,it is necessary to reconsider some methodological and epistemological aspects and get away from some wrongly perceived concepts which dated prior to the year 2000.Yet,the Arab Spring has showed that we are dealing with unfinished post-colonialism,something that we will soon come back to in another article where we will propose another solution. 展开更多

While Western observers typically attribute the population's nationalist anti-Americanism largely to government propaganda or manipulation,they misunderstand the roots of anti-American behavior in China.As depicted by Peter Hay Gries in China's New Nationalism and by Michael H.Hunt in The Genesis of China's Foreign Policy,a more nuanced portrayal is in order.While the two books utilize distinct social- psychological and historical perspectives,an integrative reading of the two suggests that popular expression is in fact largely responsible for China's anti-Americanism.At first this conclusion in favor of popular expression may seem at odds with Hunt's state-centered analysis of the roots of foreign policy.Nevertheless,after a brief summary of each book and a comparative application to the issue of anti-Americanism,the authors demonstrate that applying a comparative historical reappraisal to Hunt's study suggests that both scholarly works support the predominant role of popular expression on contemporary China's nationalist anti- Americanism. 展开更多

French was then recognized as the official language in administration. Iranian migration later took on another dimension after the 1953 Coup, a politicization that reached a peak with the arrival in Paris of Khomeini on August 2, 1978. In spite of this migratory tradition, about 4,000 persons before the revolution, the majority being from the political and financial elite, these migratory flows amplified in the middle of the 1980s, in such a way that at the end of December 2014, there were 31,000 Iranians in France. This new phase which included four waves, from a sociological point of view, can be called the diasporaisation of Iranian migration. The socio-economic profile goes from the urban elite: lawyers, officials, journalists, teachers, doctors, nurses, magistrates, military officials, company directors, political exiles, etc., to artisans such as shopkeepers, garage owners, building contractors.., and finally from the skilled labourer, on through to unskilled workers in building, restauration or removals, 展开更多

It is known that high-cholesterol diet impairs coronary vasodilatation in animal models of athe-rosclerosis irrespective of overt pathology. We evaluated the specific role of LDL and HDL on adenosine-elicited coronary vasodilatation after short time (10 weeks) high-cholesterol diet in pigs. Nineteen pigs on standard (C), atherogenic (HF) and alternate standard or atherogenic diet every other week (IHF) underwent left coronary angiography and flow (CFR) measurement during intracoronary adenosine injection. Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Apo lipoprotein A-1, IL-6, TNF-α and ICAM-1 were measured and histology of coronary samples was performed. IHF and HF show comparable intimal thickening of lesions, similar cholesterol (598.4 ± 198.2 and 633.2 ± 83.5 mg/dL) and LDL (502.6 ± 193.7 and 576.1 ± 83.2), while HDL is double in IHF group (88.3 ± 6.4 vs 46.4 ± 18.7 p < 0.0001). Vasodilation is reduced in HF (CFR = 1.6 ± 0.2, p < 0.001) as compared to C (2.6 ± 0.4), whilst it is preserved in IHF (2.7 ± 0.4). CFR and HDL values of all hypercholesterolemia cases are positively correlated (r = 0.88, p < 0.001). No relation with cytokines/cell adhesion markers is present. These findings suggest for the first time that elevation of plasma HDL level counteracts LDL related vasodilation impairment during coronary atherogenesis in swine. 展开更多
