Efficient control and removal of laser‑generated aerosol particles by combining water spray with pre‑injection of electrical charged mist for nuclear reactor decommissioning

Laser-induced aerosols,predominantly submicron in size,pose significant environmental and health risks during the decommissioning of nuclear reactors.This study experimentally investigated the removal of laser-generated aerosol particles using a water spray system integrated with an innovative system for pre-injecting electrically charged mist in our facility.To simulate aerosol generation in reactor decommissioning,a high-power laser was used to irradiate various materials(including stainless steel,carbon steel,and concrete),generating aerosol particles that were agglomerated with injected water mist and subsequently scavenged by water spray.Experimental results demonstrate enhanced aerosol removal via aerosol-mist agglomeration,with charged mist significantly improving particle capture by increasing wettability and size.The average improvements for the stainless steel,carbon steel,and concrete were 40%,44%,and 21%,respectively.The results of experiments using charged mist with different polarities(both positive and negative)and different surface coatings reveal that the dominant polarity of aerosols varies with the irradiated materials,influenced by their crystal structure and electron emission properties.Notably,surface coatings such as ZrO_(2)and CeO_(2)were found to possibly alter aerosol charging characteristics,thereby affecting aerosol removal efficiency with charged mist configurations.The innovative aerosol-mist agglomeration approach shows promise in mitigating radiation exposure,ensuring environmental safety,and reducing contaminated water during reactor dismantling.This study contributes critical knowledge for the development of advanced aerosol management strategies for nuclear reactor decommissioning.The understanding obtained in this work is also expected to be useful for various environmental and chemical engineering applications such as gas decontamination,air purification,and pollution control. 展开更多

Single Point Cutting Tool Fault Diagnosis in Turning Operation Using Reduced Error Pruning Tree Classifier

Tool wear is inevitable in daily machining process since metal cutting process involves the chip rubbing the tool surface after it has been cut by the tool edge.Tool wear dominantly influences the deterioration of surface finish,geometric and dimensional tolerances of the workpiece.Moreover,for complete utilization of cutting tools and reduction of machine downtime during the machining process,it becomes necessary to understand the develop-ment of tool wear and predict its status before happening.In this study,tool condition monitoring system was used to monitor the behavior of a single point cutting tool to predict flank wear.A uniaxial accelerometer was attached to a single point cutting tool under study.The accelerometer acquires vibrational signals during turning operation on a lathe machine.The acquired signals were then used to extract statistical features such as standard error,variance,skewness,etc.The substantial features were recognized to reduce the utilization of computing resources.They were used to classify the signals as good and three different measures of flank wear by a decision tree algorithm.Frequency domain features were also extracted and shown to be less effective in classification in comparison to statistical features.REPTree(Reduced Error Pruning Tree)algorithm was used in this study.REPTree decision tree algorithm achieved a maximum classification accuracy of 72.77%for all signals combined.When spindle speed and feed rate are considered as the variables the accuracy is about 86.25%.When spindle speed is the only variable parameter the accuracy is about 82.71%.When depth of cut,feed rate and speed of the spindle are considered as variable parameters,the accuracy of the decision tree is around 93.51%.This study demonstrates the performance of REPTree classifier in tool condition monitoring.It can be utilized for tool wear identification and thus improve surface finish,dimensional accuracy of the work piece and reduce machine down-time.Any additional research on the work may involve analysis of different classifier algorithms which could potentially predict tool wear with greater accuracy. 展开更多

Resource energy projects present a number of challenges to road authorities who need to formulate a response that allows for the appropriate infrastructure upgrades to be planned,constructed and paid for.Too often the road authority is overwhelmed by individual traffic reports from the proponents without having any reference to a system or process such as a network traffic model on which to test options and cumulative impacts.Yet to set up a functional traffic model will take time,is costly and will need some in-house capability to maintain.At the other end of the scale spread sheet style options are cumbersome to use and often out of date.This paper describes a system that allows the authority to effectively manage the transport task.The latest proposed vehicle movements can be displayed on an active GIS screen and referenced against agreed operational parameters.Various report outputs are also available upon demand.Such a system would assist state and local government authorities to manage the new development generated traffic in Qld. 展开更多

On the impingement heat transfer data,the experimental studies of air and liquid jets impingement to the flat surfaces were collected and critically reviewed.The oblique impingements of both single circular and planar slot jets were considered in particular.The review focused on the surface where the jet impingement cooling technique was utilized.The nozzle exit Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter varied in the range of 1,500–52,000.The oblique angles relative to the plane surface and the dimensionless jet-to-plate spacing vary in the range of 15°–90°and 2–12 respectively.The review suggested that the magnitude of maximum heat transfer shifted more for air jets compared with the liquid jets.The drop in the inclination angle and the jet-to-plate separation led to the increase in the asymmetry of heat transfer distribution.The displacement of maximum Nusselt number(heat transfer)locations was found to be sensitive to the inclination angle and the smaller jet-to-plate distance.Also,the Nusselt number correlations proposed by various researchers were discussed and compared with the results of the cited references. 展开更多

Thermal energy storage(TES) systems use solar energy despite its irregular availability and day-night temperature difference.Current work reports the thermal characterizations of solar salt-based phase change composites in the presence of graphene nanoplatelets(GNP).Solar salt(60:40 of NaNO_(3):KNO_(3)) possessing phase transition temperature and melting enthalpy of 221.01℃ and 134.58 kJ/kg is proposed as a phase change material(PCM) for high-temperature solar-based energy storage applications.Thermal conductivity must be improved to make them suitable for widespread applications and to close the gap between the system needs where they are employed.GNP is added at weight concentrations of 0.1%,0.3%,and 0.5% with solar salt using the ball milling method to boost its thermal conductivity.Morphological studies indicated the formation of a uniform surface of GNP on solar salt.FTIR spectrum peaks identified the physical interaction between salt and GNP.Thermal characterization of the composites,such as thermal conductivity,DSC and TGA was carried out for the samples earlier and later 300 thermal cycles.0.5% of GNP has improved the thermal conductivity of salt by 129.67% and after thermal cycling,the enhancement reduced to 125.21% indicating that thermal cycling has a minor impact on thermal conductivity.Phase change temperature decreased by around 2.32% in the presence of0.5% GNP and the latent heat reduced by 4.34% after thermal cycling.TGA thermograms depicted the composites initiated the weight loss at around 550℃ after which it was rapid.After thermal cycling,the weight loss initiated at ~40℃ lower compared to pure salt,which was found to be a minor change.Thermal characterization of solar salt and GNP-based solar salt composites revealed that the composites can be used for enhanced heat transfer in high-temperature solar-based heat transfer and energy storage applications. 展开更多

The energy efficiency enhancement of solar dryers has attracted the attention of researchers worldwide because of the need for energy storage in solar drying applications,which arises primarily from the irregular nature of solar energy that leads to improper drying which will reduce the quality of the products being dried.This work comprehensively reviews the state-of-the-art research carried out on solar dryers for energy efficiency enhancement using various alternative strategies,including hybrid solar dryers that use auxiliary heating sources,such as electric heaters or biomass heaters,solar-assisted heat pump dryer,use of desiccant materials,and heat storage systems that use both sensible and latent heat storage.The advent of phase change materials(PCM),such as thermally and chemically stable PCMs,for long-term storage,bio-degradable and bio-compatible PCM materials to alleviate the negative environmental impact of conventional PCMs is also presented.The performance parameters considered for evaluating dryers include the maximum temperature attained inside the drying chamber,drying time and efficiency,specific moisture extraction rate(SMER),energy and exergy efficiency and CO_(2) mitigation effect.The factors considered to analyze the PCMs application in solar dryers include cost and sustainability of PCMs,and both energy and exergy analyses of dryers using PCMs.The gaps in current knowledge and future scope for further improvement of solar dryers are also elucidated. 展开更多
