Treatment is multidisciplinary and requires a resective surgery if the cause is tumor-related, or an additive surgery if the cause is traumatic. This article aims to show the role of making a prosthesis to restore function (chewing, swallowing, speech) and aesthetics following maxillary bone loss. We will eighter present a clinical case involving a right maxillary tumor that was surgically resected followed by radiotherapy, and subsequently rehabilitated with a maxillofacial prosthesis in the consultation and dental treatment center of the university hospital center of Casablanca.展开更多

They are used to prevent bone metastases in cancer and treat osteoporosis. However, a major side effect is osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), first reported in 2003, which is the exposure of necrotic bone in the mouth, often accompanied by infection. Prevention and treatment of ONJ remain challenging due to a lack of reliable epidemiological data on its incidence and risk factors. The aim of our work is to estimate the prevalence of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) and to analyze its correlations with different risk factors reported in the literature. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted in the Oncology, Rheumatology and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Mohamed VI University Hospital;Marrakech, based on complete medical records during the period 2017 to 2022, as well as consultations of patients under bisphosphonates in these departments during July and August 2022. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS version 16.0. Results: Of the 107 patients included in this study, 60.7% were women, and 56.1% were between 40 and 65 years old. 100% of the patients suffered from a general pathology. Regarding treatment with BP, 103 patients were treated with Zoledronate, 4 with Risedronate, and 5 with Ibandronate. 103 patients received this treatment intravenously, while 4 patients received it orally. Regarding Oral health, only 12.1% of patients reported a poor oral health. 99.1% of patients were informed of the need for oral preparation prior to BP treatment, but only 71.02% received dental treatment, mainly tooth extraction. None of the patients were diagnosed with BRONJ. Conclusions: While the global incidence of ONJ ranges from 0.8% to 12%, our finding is zero. Most previous studies are retrospective with limited patient numbers like our study. To accurately assess the prevalence of ONJ, further prospective epidemiological studies with standardized protocols and thorough follow-up over several years are essential.展开更多

Zirconia blocks (N=240; 6 mm x 7 mm x 7 mm) were manufactured from two materials namely, ICE Zirconia (Group 1) and Prettau Zirconia (Group 2). In their green stage, they were randomly divided into two groups. Half of the specimens were coloured with colouring liquid (shade A2), Three different veneering ceramics with different TEC (ICE Ceramic, GC Initial Zr and IPS e.max Ceram) were fired on both coloured and non-coloured zirconia cores. Specimens of high noble alloys (Esteticor Plus) veneered with ceramic (VM 13) (n= 16) acted as the control group. Core-veneer interface of the specimens were subjected to shear force in the Universal Testing Machine (0.5 mm-min-1). Neither the zirconia core material (P=0.318) nor colouring (P=0.188) significantly affected the results (three-way analysis of variance, Tukey's test). But the results were significantly affected by the veneering ceramic (P=0.000). Control group exhibited significantly higher mean bond strength values (45.7__.8) MPa than all other tested groups ((27.1__.4.1)-(39.7__.4.7) and (27.4__.5.6)-(35.9___4.7) MPa with and without colouring, respectively) (P^0.001). While in zirconia-veneer test groups, predominantly mixed type of failures were observed with the veneering ceramic covering ~ 1/3 of the substrate surface, in the metal-ceramic group, veneering ceramic was left adhered 1/3 of the metal surface. Colouring zirconia did not impair adhesion of veneering ceramic, but veneering ceramic had a significant influence on the core-veneer adhesion. Metal-ceramic adhesion was more reliable than all zirconia-veneer ceramics tested.展开更多

The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of gatifloxacin and its bactericidal effects were investigated. Gatifloxacin inhibited the growth of all three kinds of periodontopathic bacteria tested in broth. The MIC value of 2.5 nM was found to be the most effective in inhibiting A. actinomycetemcomitans. An adenosine triphosphate biolumi-nescence assay revealed that gatifloxacin exhibited bactericidal effects on the tested bacteria in a time-dependent manner. The safety of gatifloxacin in mammalian cells was evaluated by assessing the viability of normal human dermal fibroblast (NHDF) cells treated with gatifloxacin. Almost all NHDF cells survived after 2-d culture, while 81% of the cells survived after 4-d culture when treated with 1.0 × 103 nM gatifloxacin. These results indicate that gatifloxacin is a possible drug for local administration to prevent periodontal infection.展开更多

Methods: Stabilization occlusal splints of 3, 5 and 7 mm thickness were respectively used during clenching from light contact in intercuspal position and the movement of condyles and incisor point were recorded in 5 healthy subjects. Results:The condyles moved anteriorly and superiorly without wearing occlusal splint. When wearing the occlusal splints the condyles displaced anteriorly and inferiorly. The distance of displacement increased gradually with raising the thickness of splint, though the significant difference was just found in right condyle in superior- inferior movement. The condyles went again on a path of anterior and superior direction when subjects clenched from the displaced position. In right condyle the displacement was significantly greater at 7 mm splint than that at 3 mm splint both in anterior-posterior and inferior-superior direction, while in left condyle only in anterior-posterior direction. Meanwhile, the incisal point movement was larger at 7 mm splint than at 3 mm splint in inferior-superior direction. In tapping movement there were no significant differences in condyle movement between the different thickness of occlusal splint. However, the coefficient of variation in total cycle time was the greatest when wearing the splint of 7 mm. Conclusion: Occlusal splint of 7 mm has greater effect than that of 3 mm on condyle movement, but no obvious difference with occlusal splint of 5 mm. When occlusal splint of 7 mm is inserted, the stability of condyle might be influenced during tapping movement.展开更多

There are a large number of plant species that have been traditionally used for oral diseases by the Moroccan population. These species could provide a source for discovering new active principles of natural origin against Candida albicans involved in the appearance of candidiasis infections. Information was acquired using the electronic databases Web of Science, Scopus and PubMed. In the first part, this review presents the medicinal plants used by the Moroccan population for the treatment of oral disorders (Toothaches, gingivitis, ulcers, stomatitis, abscesses, ...). The second part describes different studies regarding the antifungal activity of essential oils and organic extracts of some Moroccan species against Candida albicans. Inhibition zone diameter (IZD), Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) values of essential oils and plant’s extracts were noted. The third part concerns Moroccan plants with the antifungal activity that can be used in medical and agricultural fields. Several species of Moroccan plant proved their effectiveness against Candida albicans and can be used for the treatment of oral candidiasis. Further research should be undertaken in the future to investigate the toxicity of essential oils and plant extracts with antifungal properties for clinical use. This review provided an update on Moroccan plants presenting antifungal activity and especially those active against Candida albicans.展开更多

For medical and dental applications, it is important that Sr-HA is prepared as a thin film so that the Sr fully substitutes the Ca sites in the HA structure and does not form segregated impurities consisting of Sr compounds. If the segregated Sr forms different amounts of different impurities, the dissolution of the Sr into the living body will not be reproducible across different samples. To confirm the Sr substitution into the Ca site in the HA structure, the systematic variation in the lattice constants of the Sr-HA with Sr content was evaluated as the first step. The a- and c-axis lengths were found to exhibit a linear relationship with the Sr content for six samples with different Sr contents, indicating that the prepared Sr-HA thin films likely possessed partial Sr substitution into the Ca sites of the HA structure. This result is an important first step in the accurate evaluation of the biological effects of Sr-HA thin films.展开更多

This patient’s periodontal condition and her inability to afford pre-prosthetic surgery, bone grafting or even a fixed partial denture for replacement of the proposed units after extraction necessitated alternative treatment options to implants. Her profession required interaction with the public and as such an immediate replacement was essential. Impressions were taken and an immediate partial denture fabricated using a visible light cure acrylic. The mobile teeth were extracted and the denture delivered to the patient with minimal adjustments. The patient was monitored for three months while healing of the extraction site occurred and her periodontal condition was treated. Inability to afford definitive treatment for one year required the denture be maintained for that period. Follow up showed that the aesthetics, function and structural integrity of the denture had not been compromised.展开更多
